DHAKA, 21 April 2004 — Additional judge of the high court Syed Shahidur Rahman has been removed from his judiciary post on graft charges. President Iajuddin Ahmed gave him the marching orders “in exercise of his powers under article 96(6) of the constitution”, said an official announcement yesterday.

Syed Shahidur Rahman is the first judge in the country’s history to be sacked upon recommendation from the Supreme Judicial Council, comprising three senior most judges of the Supreme Court, including the chief justice.

Earlier, Prime Minister Khaleda Zia had given the go-ahead for the removal of the judge for misconduct.

The prime minister approved a presidential note on the Supreme Judicial Council’s Jan. 26 verdict report with an opinion that the judge in question should stand down as additional judge.
