ISLAMABAD: Meta-owned Facebook and Instagram were back up on Tuesday after a more than two-hour outage that was caused by a technical issue and impacted hundreds of thousands of users globally.
The disruptions started at around 10 a.m. ET (1500 GMT), with many users saying on rival social media platform X they had been booted out of Facebook and Instagram and were unable to log in.
In Pakistan, Facebook, Instagram and Messenger users said they were unable to log in to these platforms and encountered a “session expired” message at each attempt.
“Meta platforms including Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and Threads are currently experiencing outages related to login sessions in multiple countries,” Netblocks, a London-based Internet monitor, said on X.
“Incident not related to country-level Internet disruptions or filtering.”
There were more than 500,000 reports of outages for Facebook and more than 90,000 reports for Instagram at the peak of service disruption, according to outage tracking website Downdetector.com.
“Earlier today, a technical issue caused people to have difficulty accessing some of our services. We resolved the issue,” Meta spokesperson Andy Stone said in a post on X, without elaborating on the issue.
Downdetector.com, which tracks outages by collating status reports from several sources, said there were around 200 reports of outages for its family app WhatsApp.
