Namibia spring surprise in ICC League 2 opening series
  • African side clocks up three wins from four games in Nepal
  • Next round of matches in UAE will feature hosts, Scotland, Canada

KATHMANDU: The opening series of matches in the new International Cricket Council World Cup League 2 cycle ended this week with a shock victory for Namibia in Nepal, as the tournament prepares to move on to the UAE, who will host Scotland and Canada.

Namibia won three out of their four matches in tough conditions, including a double over the hosts.

Nepal came back from the defeat in their second match to spring a shock of their own by beating perennial World Cup participants the Netherlands. It was a torrid tournament for the Dutch, who lost their first match to Namibia.

The series ended with Namibia on six points, the Netherlands on four and Nepal on two.

Namibia’s coach Pierre de Bruyn told Arab News he was “over the moon” with his team’s performance in the opening round.

“Last year we lost four games in Nepal and we learned a lot from that,” he said. “Winning six points in Nepal is incredible, beating them twice at home and taking points off them. It’s early days but we realized how important a point could be last time and that we should be ruthless in order to take points.”

Nepal, who only lost two home series in the entire 2019-23 League 2 campaign, had a series to forget this time round, with inconsistent batting from an ever-changing middle order.

Head coach Monty Desai said his team would now be doing all they could to win away from home.

“Losing at home hurts, but if you want to be known as the associate’s top team, away games are equally important,” he said. “We have been working very hard and need to bring maturity to it.”

Netherlands coach Ryan Cook rejected the notion that his team’s two defeats were a shock, despite their higher One Day International ranking.

“Shocking? Not at all. This is a very competitive league and it’s completely different game of cricket,” he said. “We’ve got to be able to adapt to those conditions. We are entering a new era in terms of the league.”

The next series of games feature the UAE, Scotland and Canada.

Canada’s coach Pubudu Dassanayake, who led Nepal in the 2019-23 League 2 cycle, said he was happy with his team’s performances in a series of warmup games played recently in Nepal.

“More than winning and losing, we were exposed in all three departments (of batting, bowling and fielding). More than just winning, I am happy we could find out our weaknesses. We expect to have our fast bowlers back to full fitness and perform in those conditions (in the UAE),” he said.

Oman and the US make up the eight teams that feature in the 2023-27 League 2 competition. Each side will play 36 matches — 12 at home, 12 away and 12 at a neutral ground — across nine triangular series. The top four will advance to the ICC Cricket World Cup qualifier and the chance to secure a place in the tournament proper.

  • Smalling was a key member of the Roma team that won the inaugural Europa Conference League in 2022

ROME: Former England defender Chris Smalling signed with Saudi Arabian club Al-Fayha, ending his stay at Roma after five seasons.

The 34-year-old Smalling signed a two-year deal, Al-Fayha said late Monday.

Roma also offloaded 19-year-old Brazilian winger Joao Costa to Al-Ettifaq, another Saudi Arabian club, in a permanent deal.

Costa made just five appearances in Serie A and the Europa League for Roma.

Smalling was a key member of the Roma team that won the inaugural Europa Conference League in 2022.

He made 31 appearances for England from 2011-17.

While the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar were attracted by huge contracts in recent years, the Saudi league has not drawn the top international players this year.

While there had been speculation of a move by Victor Osimhen, Al-Ahli instead signed Ivan Toney on deadline day from Brentford after Toney couldn’t find a deal in the Premier League.

Osimhen was finalizing a loan to Galatasaray on Tuesday.

Bangladesh skipper believes historic cricket triumph in Pakistan will bring smiles at home
  • Bangladesh won two consecutive Test matches against Pakistan at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium
  • The team is now scheduled to tour India this month for two Test and three Twenty20 matches

RAWALPINDI: Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto believed his team’s first test cricket series win over Pakistan will give his compatriots reason to smile amid ongoing difficulties.
The recent civil unrest that toppled Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wajid caused Bangladesh to be stripped of the Women’s Twenty20 World Cup, and in the past week the country has been hit by deadly flash floods that have affected millions of people.
“For the last one and a half months, everyone (in Bangladesh) has struggled a lot,” Shanto said after Bangladesh beat Pakistan by six wickets in the second test on the last day Tuesday.
“We all know cricket is a very emotional thing in our country, so I hope they will get some smiles because we’ve won the series.”
Bangladesh followed an epic 10-wicket victory in the first test at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium with a comeback win in the second test on the same ground.
Bangladesh was 26-6 in its first innings but Litton Das and Mehidy Hasan Miraz batted them to just a 12-run deficit. Then the fast bowlers dismissed Pakistan for 172 and Bangladesh reached the winning target of 185 in 56 overs.
“The belief in the dressing room is very different this time,” Shanto said. “We were nervous (at 26-6) but the way Litton and Miraz batted … we believed that those guys will take us to a good position.”
Shanto was impressed with the work ethic of young fast bowlers Hasan Mahmud and Nahid Rana, who shared nine wickets in the second innings.
“We read the conditions very well,” Shanto said. “The bowlers did their job … and just tried to bowl in the channel for a long time, not like one or two overs. The bowlers did a lot of hard work and that’s why we got the result.”
Bangladesh is scheduled to tour India this month for two tests and three Twenty20s, and Shanto said the historic win in Pakistan — only their second series triumph away from home — boosts their morale.
“This series (in Pakistan) gives us a lot of confidence,” Shanto said.

Reflecting the Kingdom’s dedication to nurturing young talent and inspiring future athletes, the campaign also includes players from the youth national teams, symbolizing the future of Saudi football and solidifying Saudi Arabia’s football legacy for generations to come.

  • New 6,500-seater ballpark will feature synthetic turf, state-of-the-art lighting system, and the most advanced ball tracking equipment available
  • Ballpark’s dimensions are modeled on Yankee Stadium, one of the most famous baseball stadiums in the world

DUBAI: Baseball United, the first professional baseball league focused on the Middle East and South Asia, has announced plans to build the first professional baseball field and ballpark in the region.

The new ballpark will be in Dubai, the city in which Baseball United played its historic inaugural games last year.

“Our league has brought together so many powerful ingredients to help make baseball the Middle East and South Asia’s next great sport,” said Kash Shaikh, chairman, CEO and co-founder of Baseball United.

“From our passionate fanbase and legendary co-owners, to our world-class players and historic franchises, we’ve worked hard to bring the best of baseball to Dubai. The only thing that has been missing was a place to call home.

“We wanted a true, purpose-built baseball ballpark that can serve as the launchpad for professional baseball across the region. We wanted something that was entrepreneurial and right-sized, that combined new technology while paying homage to baseball’s 150-year tradition. Thanks to the hard work of our team and the shared vision of our incredible partners, we can now make that dream a reality.”

The new ballpark will be built within The Sevens sports and entertainment complex, located on Al-Ain Road (E66), a short drive from downtown Dubai.

Tentatively called Baseball United Ballpark, with negotiations for naming rights still ongoing, the field will feature a dual fiber, synthetic turf playing surface. The turf includes an organic infill and geotextile fabric optimized to ensure performance in Dubai’s high temperatures. The LED lighting system will generate more than 15 million lumens from eight lighting towers and 94 total fixtures, including the most advanced BallTracker technology available. The ballpark’s moveable, modular seating configuration will enable space for up to 6,500 fans.

Baseball United will construct above-ground dugouts, foul lines and foul poles, and a professional-grade netting system. In addition to a state-of-the-art LED content wall, the new ballpark will include a traditional scoreboard modeled on the 19th century professional games in the US.

The ballpark will have four different seating sections, including the ultra-premium Diamond Club, optimal sight-line infield boxes, value-priced outfield boxes, and Baseball United’s signature VVIP On-Field Cabanas.

The ballpark’s dimensions are modeled on Yankee Stadium, one of the most famous baseball stadiums in the world, with the fences measuring 318 feet (97 m) to left field, 314 feet (96 m) to right field, and 408 feet (124 m) to center field.

The playing field will be named after Major League Baseball legend and Baseball United co-founder and board member, Barry Larkin, who teamed up with Shaikh, John Miedreich and Mariano Rivera to create Baseball United in 2022.

Larkin is considered one of the best shortstops in the history of the game, making 12 All-Star teams and winning three Gold Glove Awards. Larkin was World Series Champion and the 1995 National League MVP. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2012.

“I am truly honored to have my name associated with this historic field,” Larkin said. “For me, it has been a dream come true to bring this league to life with Kash, John, and the entire Baseball United team. We’ve already played the first professional baseball games in the UAE, and now, to have a field and ballpark of our own — it’s incredible. I can’t wait to step foot on that field later this year.”

Baseball United has teamed up with some of the best stadium and pitch builders in the world to create its ballpark. The league will partner with UK-based SIS Pitches on the turf, netting, and overall field development, Iowa (US)-based Musco Lighting on the lighting system, and Dubai-based Al-Laith for the seating.

Field construction begins this week, with the field scheduled to be completed by the end of the year. Baseball United’s two signature professional events next year — the Baseball United Cup and Baseball United Season One will both take place in the new ballpark.

Baseball United may also opt to host its Arab Classic national team event at the new ballpark in November during the final stages of construction.

“We are excited to partner with Baseball United to make history again here in Dubai,” said Mathew Tait, general manager, Emirates Dubai 7s and The Sevens stadium. “Adding baseball to our venue aligns perfectly with our strategy to make The Sevens the region’s premier multisport destination. We can’t wait to ‘play ball’ here in Dubai.”

McIlroy set to defend Race to Dubai crown at 2024 DP World Tour Championship
  • Season-ending event takes place at Jumeirah Golf Estates from Nov. 14-17
  • Rory McIlroy: Competing at the DP World Tour Championship is always something I look forward to at the end of the season

DUBAI: Rory McIlroy will return to Dubai with his sights set on securing a third DP World Tour Championship title and equaling the late, great Seve Ballesteros’ record of six Harry Vardon Trophies at the season-ending Rolex Series event from Nov. 14-17.

The reigning Race to Dubai champion opened his 2024 season with a successful title defense at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic, and the Northern Irishman has remained atop the rankings since January following a runner-up finish at the Dubai Invitational, and strong performances at the first three majors.

The Earth Course at Jumeirah Golf Estates has been a prosperous venue for the world No.3, who has won the event twice and topped the season-long standings in 2012, 2014, 2015, 2022, and most recently in 2023.

The 35-year-old has moved clear into third place for the most Race to Dubai victories, one behind Ballesteros and three behind Colin Montgomerie, as he looks to add another European Number One crown to his already impressive career.

The four-time major champion leads the Race to Dubai Rankings in Partnership with Rolex over Adam Scott by 1,554.39 points. He will spend two weeks in the United Arab Emirates following confirmation he will tee it up at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship — the first event of the DP World Tour Play-offs, a new two-event series also incorporating the season-ending DP World Tour Championship.

The top 70 available players at the conclusion of the “Back 9” events will gather at Yas Links in Abu Dhabi before the top 50 available players move on to Dubai, as the new-look season comes to a dramatic close.

“Competing at the DP World Tour Championship is always something I look forward to at the end of the season,” McIlroy said. “Dubai has been a special place for me, and I’ve been fortunate to achieve a lot of success there. To have the chance to equal Seve’s record is incredibly meaningful. He was a pioneer for European golf, and his impact on the world game can’t be overstated.

“It’s going to be a couple of big weeks in the Middle East with the DP World Tour Play-offs and I’m focused on playing some good golf to put myself in contention for more titles.”
