ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Sunday condemned a militant attack in Somalia that killed five military trainers, including four from the United Arab Emirates and one from Bahrain, the Pakistani foreign ministry said.
Three Emirati soldiers and a Bahraini officer were killed on Saturday, when they were training the Somali national army in a camp in the capital Mogadishu, the UAE announced. The fourth Emirati soldier, who was among two injured in the attack, passed away upon arrival in the UAE on Sunday.
The gunman was a member of the Somali army who was killed in the shooting, according to Somali army officials. The attack was claimed by Al-Shabab, a militant group aligned with Al-Qaeda that has waged a violent insurgency against Somalia’s central government and its foreign backers for over 15 years.
“Pakistan strongly condemns yesterday’s heinous terrorist attack against the UAE military trainers and under training Somalian soldiers at a military base in Mogadishu,” the Pakistani foreign ministry said in a statement.
“We offer our deepest condolences to the governments and the people of the UAE and Bahrain and to the families of victims and pray for the early recovery of all the injured.”
The United Arab Emirates and Somalia signed a military and security cooperation agreement in January 2023. The Gulf country “continues to coordinate and cooperate with the Somali government in investigating the sinful terrorist act,” the UAE defense ministry said in a statement.
Through a post on X, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud also sent his condolences “to the government and the people of the United Arab Emirates over the death of the military officers in Mogadishu who came to assist in rebuilding the Somali army.”
Pakistan said it rejected “terrorism in all its forms and manifestations” and stood in firm solidarity with the government of Somalia in combating militancy.
