CAIRO: The Arab Parliament has condemned plans by Argentine President Javier Milei to relocate the country’s embassy in Israel to Jerusalem.

The parliament condemned the move and said that the legal, historical and religious status of Jerusalem was not subject to review.

It said that any steps in this direction represented a violation of international law and was considered an infringement on the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people.

The parliament said that the measure would undermine the two-state solution and encourage the occupying entity and extremist settler groups to continue attacks on the Palestinian people and Christian and Islamic sanctities in the occupied city of Jerusalem.

It called on the Argentine president to rescind the decision, which would consolidate the reality of the occupation.

It asked Javier Milei to follow the approach of the South American countries that defend the rights of the Palestinian people to establish their independent state with the city of Jerusalem as its capital.

The parliament said that the move contravened the resolutions of the UN General Assembly and Security Council, was considered null and void, and had no legal effect.

It called on the international community to put pressure on the Argentine government to withdraw from taking the measure and to abide by international law and legitimacy resolutions related to the legal and historical status of the city of Jerusalem.

Milei, who was elected last November, plans to move the Argentinian Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, which he announced on Tuesday during his visit to the Hebrew state.

Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit has condemned plans by Argentina to relocate the embassy to Jerusalem.

Jamal Rushdi, a spokesperson for Aboul Gheit, said UN Security Council Resolution 478, adopted in 1980, explicitly deems all Israeli actions in Jerusalem to be invalid, necessitating their annulment.
