TAKREEM Foundation honors Arab changemakers at ceremony in Oman

TAKREEM Foundation hosted its 13th Arab Excellence Awards Ceremony on Feb. 3, at Al-Bustan Palace Hotel in Muscat, Oman. Amidst challenging times, the foundation reaffirmed its commitment to showcasing inspirational stories and fostering a narrative of hope and progress within the Arab world.

Gathering over 500 distinguished figures from politics, culture, science, arts, media, and business across the Arab world, the ceremony served as a platform to honor changemakers who have outshined and made significant contributions in different walks of life. The evening, presented by prominent journalist Laila Al-Shaikhli, commenced with a heartfelt tribute to Palestine, acknowledging the resilience and unwavering spirit of its people.

Ricardo Karam, founder of TAKREEM and executive chair of the board, delivered a poignant address, paying homage to the martyrs, reporters, and medical professionals who have selflessly dedicated themselves to serving their communities. His words resonated with the audience, emphasizing the enduring strength and poetry of the Arab spirit.

The ceremony saw the presentation of its awards to the following:

  • TAKREEM Award for Corporate Leadership: Hatem Dowidar (Egypt)
  • TAKREEM Award for Cultural Excellence: Arab Fund for Arts and Culture — represented by Rima Mismar (Lebanon)
  • TAKREEM Award for Environmental Development and Sustainability: Dr. Yousef Al-Horr (Qatar)
  • TAKREEM Award for Excellence in Education: Nayla Zreik Fahed (Lebanon)
  • TAKREEM Award for Outstanding Arab Woman: Dr. Amani El-Tunsi (Egypt)
  • TAKREEM Award for Science and Technological Achievement: Dr. Rachid Deriche (Algeria)
  • TAKREEM Award for Young Entrepreneur: Anis Kallel (Tunisia)

Additionally, special distinctions were bestowed upon frontline journalists and organizations that have demonstrated exceptional dedication and service. Notably, the “Lifetime Achievement” Award was presented to the plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. Ghassan Abu Sittah from Palestine, who dedicated the award to the courageous medical teams in Gaza.

The 2023 TAKREEM jury board played a pivotal role in selecting the deserving recipients, ensuring the integrity and excellence of the awards. The board includes Ramez Shehadi, Fares Akkad, Dr. Hiam Ali, Paula Al-Askari, Sheikha Paula Al-Sabah, Rana Zaim Idriss, Khaled Janahi, Maher Kaddoura, Salah Khalil, Abdul Hamied Seddiqi, Basma Al-Sulaiman, Shwan Taha, and Sheikha Alanoud bint Hamad Al-Thani.
