Passion in stands match drama on pitch at AFC Asian Cup in Qatar
  • The joyous atmosphere witnessed at the 2022 World Cup has been replicated in Qatar during the continent’s showpiece tournament

This AFC Asian Cup has had its fair share of surprises.

There has been Iraq’s stunning win over Japan, Malaysia’s remarkable last-minute equalizer to draw 3-3 with South Korea, and Tajikistan’s fairytale run to the quarterfinals. It is turning out to be a tournament to remember.

And consider also the drama at the Khalifa International Stadium yesterday when Jordan scored twice in second-half stoppage time to stun Iraq 3-2 and knock the 2007 champions out of the tournament.

But the scenes off the pitch have arguably been the biggest surprise of all.

Following so soon after the magic of Qatar 2022 was always going to be a tough task, especially for a tournament that does not have the same broad appeal as the World Cup and attracts significantly fewer overseas fans.

But while the scale may be different, the same atmosphere generated by the World Cup can be seen in the stadiums and throughout the streets of Doha, most notably the narrow confines of Souq Waqif.

The historic marketplace, a labyrinthine of narrow alleyways, has long been a gathering place where locals and Bedouins would meet to trade a variety of goods, including fish, goats and wool.

While it is now essentially a tourist attraction, selling a mix of tourist and traditional items, its status as a meeting place remains and whereas once it was fish and goats being traded, now it is football culture.

Fans from all over including Qatar, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Malaysia have had their turn to take over the famous marketplace, with thousands upon thousands descending to sing and dance their way into the night in their traditional style.

It has created a vibe and momentum around the tournament that is as intoxicating as it is unexpected.

Last night it was Jordan fans taking over as they celebrated their side’s remarkable 3-2 victory over Iraq.

The Souq, however, is simply a reflection of what is happening inside the stadiums where there have been record attendances.

The magical 1 million mark was broken, for total attendance, at the Khalifa International Stadium on Monday when 35,814 turned up on a rare overcast afternoon to witness one of the upsets of the tournament.

A further 63,753 made the long — by Qatari standards — trek out to the majestic Al-Bayt stadium in Al-Khor to watch the home side make it 11 consecutive wins in the AFC Asian Cup with a 2-1 win over Palestine.

With largely full stadiums expected the deeper the tournament progresses, it is not beyond the realm that overall attendance could smash 1.5 million by the time the final, to be played at the Lusail Stadium, comes around on Feb. 10.

Comparisons to previous tournaments are always unfair, and in this case not an entirely accurate affair given this year’s tournament (and that of 2019) contains 24 teams, whereas previous iterations had only 16, resulting in an extra 19 matches being played.

But for the sake of the exercise, the last time Qatar hosted the Asian Cup back in 2011, the entire tournament attracted just 405,361 fans.

While it is true that the tournament was played in smaller stadiums, long before the World Cup venues came into existence, it is also true that football in Qatar, and the Gulf more broadly, was in a very different place in 2011 compared to 2024.

Nowhere is that more true than in Saudi Arabia, where the Asian Cup in 2027 will take place.

Putting aside the rapid development of football within the Kingdom, in 2011 they crashed out without a win and their matches were attended by a combined total of just 35,139 fans.

Their opening game this tournament attracted 41,987, while they averaged just over 40,000 for their three group stage games.

Fan bases all across the Gulf have been awakened, and the result has been the explosion of color and noise witnessed across Qatar over the past few weeks.

The gauntlet has now been thrown down to Saudi Arabia to build on this success come 2027, and no doubt the authorities will pull out all the stops to ensure the carnival being experienced in Doha is replicated across the Kingdom.

But that is for another four years. For now, we are still reveling in the sights and sounds of this Asian Cup that is elevating Asian football and this tournament to the lofty heights we all want it to achieve.

What is exciting, with the quarterfinals, semifinals and final still to be played, the best is surely yet to come.

Slot hails ‘hardest’ win as Liverpool stay above victorious City by beating Chelsea

Slot hails ‘hardest’ win as Liverpool stay above victorious City by beating Chelsea
  • Third-placed Arsenal lost at Bournemouth on Saturday, leaving Liverpool and City the main title rivals early on in the season

LIVERPOOL: Liverpool are looking more and more like Manchester City’s main title rivals after beating resurgent Chelsea 2-1 on Sunday to stay top of the Premier League table.
After City needed an injury-time header from John Stones to beat last-placed Wolves 2-1 in the early kickoff, Liverpool answered with a composed performance at Anfield to hand Chelsea their first league loss since the opening round.
Having seen third-placed Arsenal lose at Bournemouth on Saturday to raise questions about the Gunners’ title hopes, Liverpool and City took full advantage to build a small gap atop the standings. Arne Slot’s team leads on 21 points from eight games, one ahead of City and four above Arsenal.
It was Slot’s most significant win at Anfield so far and prevented Chelsea from moving into third place, with the visitors remaining sixth instead.
“Many other games were hard but this might have been the hardest maybe, because of the amount of quality players they (Chelsea) have and the structure they have,” Slot said. “We had to fight really hard to get this one over the line.”
Curtis Jones orchestrated the win for Liverpool, earning a penalty for Mohamed Salah’s first-half opener and then scoring himself to restore the host’s lead in the 51st minute, shortly after Nicolas Jackson had equalized for Chelsea.
Jones also thought he had earned a second penalty in first-half injury time, but it was overturned after a VAR review judged that Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez got the ball before bundling over the Liverpool player.
But he capped a stellar performance by beating the offside trap to get on the end of a ball into the box from Salah and slot in the winner.
“As soon as Mo had the ball I made the run, but it bounced so I had to have a touch, and then thankfully it went in,” Jones said.
Liverpool was the last team other than City to win the title, in 2019-20, and pushed Pep Guardiola’s team to the very end several times under Jurgen Klopp before finishing just fifth two years ago and a distant third last season.
In Slot’s first season in charge, though, the Reds are looking like credible challengers again and have now won 10 of 11 games in all competitions.
And City are looking far from unbeatable, needing another last-gasp goal from Stones to avoid a third league draw in four games against a Wolves team that only has one point so far.
It also needed a VAR intervention for the goal to stand, as referee Chris Kavanagh was called to the sideline monitor to review whether Bernardo Silva was interfering with goalkeeper Jose Sa from an offside position.
“We are not used to winning games at the end,” said Guardiola, whose team has won four straight league titles by regularly overwhelming most opponents. “It is a good flavor for us.”
It also extended City’s unbeaten streak to a club-record 31 league games, beating a mark Guardiola’s team had set in 2018.
With prolific striker Erling Haaland held scoreless for a third straight league game, City’s defenders provided the goals instead after Jorgen Strand Larsen had given the hosts a surprising early lead in the seventh minute.
Josko Gvardiol curled in a superb right-foot shot from outside the area to equalize in the 33rd minute but Wolves then repelled wave after wave of City attacks before the late intervention from Stones, who also netted a last-gasp equalizer against Arsenal in the eighth minute of injury time last month.
“These moments don’t come often for us,” Stones said. “We’ve come up with a few over the years and today was one of them.”

Kane hat-trick sends Bayern top past Leipzig
  • Leipzig’s earlier 2-0 win at Mainz had allowed them to leapfrog Bayern into top spot
  • Kane came into the match without a goal for club or country in four games — his longest drought since moving to Germany

LEVERKUSEN, Germany: A second-half Harry Kane hat-trick took Bayern Munich back to the top of the Bundesliga, ahead of RB Leipzig, with a 4-0 home win over Stuttgart on Saturday.
Leipzig’s earlier 2-0 win at Mainz had allowed them to leapfrog Bayern into top spot, while Kane came into the match without a goal for club or country in four games — his longest drought since moving to Germany.
Stuttgart, who surprisingly finished one spot ahead of Bayern in second place last season, held the hosts at bay but the dam eventually broke in the 57th minute, when Kane’s long-range effort dribbled past goalkeeper Alexander Nuebel.
Kane added a second just three minutes later, clipping the ball through a crowded penalty box and past Nuebel to double Bayern’s lead.
The England captain pounced on a loose ball on the 80-minute mark to bring up his third, chalking up his sixth hat-trick in Bayern colors and his 57th goal for the German giants in all competitions.
France forward Kingsley Coman scored in the final minute to complete the win.
Earlier on Saturday, goals from Xavi Simons and captain Willi Orban took Leipzig past Mainz, just days out from their home Champions League clash with Liverpool.
Still unbeaten this season in Germany alongside Bayern, Leipzig took the lead after 20 minutes thanks to an excellent Simons solo goal.
Leipzig captain Orban tapped in a rebound from a Lois Openda cross to put his side 2-0 ahead.
Orban told Sky: “We could have finished things off earlier but we’re happy with the win.”
Victor Boniface’s 72nd-minute goal was the difference as Bayer Leverkusen beat Eintracht Frankfurt 2-1 at home.
Leverkusen were given an early chance when Amine Adli was felled in the box, sending Boniface to the spot after a long VAR review. The Nigerian’s shot, too soft and central, was gobbled up by Frankfurt goalkeeper Kevin Trapp.
Just five minutes later, the referee was sent to the video screen again, this time finding a penalty for Frankfurt, with Robert Andrich lightly touching Omar Marmoush’s foot.
Marmoush showed Boniface how it is done, blasting a low shot left to give the visitors the lead on 16 minutes. The Egyptian now has an incredible nine goals and five assists in just seven league games this season.
Andrich made good on his error soon afterwards, combining expertly with Adli and Martin Terrier to flit through the penalty area for a superb one-touch goal in the 25th minute.
Boniface would also redeem himself, giving Leverkusen the lead inside the final 20 minutes, heading in a deflected cross from substitute Florian Wirtz to put the hosts on course for victory.
Andrich told Sky Germany: “We were focussed and played good football.
“And there was a nice goal from me,” he added with a grin.
The 30-year-old midfielder, who made his Germany debut last season after a career largely spent in the lower divisions, said of his performance: “I always have fun playing football, but I maybe have to work a bit harder than the rest.”
Elsewhere, Freiburg continued their impressive start to the season with a 3-1 home win over Augsburg to go into outright third.
Freiburg were three goals up at half-time, with Vincenzo Grifo, Philipp Lienhart and Christian Guenter scoring, before Augsburg’s Phillip Tietz pulled one back in the second period.
Borussia Moenchengladbach striker Tim Kleindienst scored a double, days after making his Germany debut, in a 3-2 home win over former club Heidenheim.
Hoffenheim won their first game since their season opener, with Andrej Kramaric, Marius Buelter and Haris Tabakovic scoring in a 3-1 win over lowly Bochum, who sit last with just one point from seven games.

Arsenal stunned by Bournemouth and Garnacho sparks Man United comeback
  • Goals from Ryan Christie and Justin Kluivert sealed victory for Bournemouth at Vitality Stadium to leave third-placed Arsenal a point behind leader Liverpool
  • Fourth-placed Aston Villa tightened up the top of the standings by moving to within a point of leader Liverpool

MANCHESTER: Title-chasing Arsenal lost to Bournemouth 2-0 in one of the biggest shocks of the burgeoning English Premier League on Saturday.
Runner-up in the last two seasons, Arsenal had the chance to top the standings with a win, but lost for the first time after going down to 10 men when William Saliba was sent off before halftime.
Goals from Ryan Christie and Justin Kluivert sealed victory for Bournemouth at Vitality Stadium to leave third-placed Arsenal a point behind leader Liverpool and level with Manchester City in second, having played a game more than its title rivals.
While it was a stunning loss for Arsenal, Manchester United picked up only their third league win by beating Brentford 2-1.
Fourth-placed Aston Villa tightened up the top of the standings by moving to within a point of leader Liverpool and level with Arsenal after beating Fulham 3-1. Brighton were three points off the pace after winning at Newcastle 1-0.
Garnacho stunner
Alejandro Garnacho scored from a brilliant volley as United fought back to beat Brentford.
The Argentina international fired home from a tight angle when connecting with Marcus Rashford’s cross just after halftime.
It sparked a comeback that saw Rasmus Hojlund hit the winner and ease the pressure on manager Erik ten Hag.
“In this team you see its togetherness and there is a fighting spirit,” Ten Hag said. “And today we add some determination to score goals and that is what we needed.”
United were reeling from their worst season start in the Premier League era heading into Saturday’s game and it looked like being another disappointing day for Ten Hag, who was angered when Ethan Pinnock opened the scoring for Brentford in contentious circumstances in first-half added time.
United defender Matthijs de Ligt was ordered off for medical attention on his bleeding head from a collision. It left the home team down a man as Brentford prepared to take a corner and Pinnock headed over the line in the fifth minute of added time.
United responded quickly after the break thanks to Garnacho’s goal in the 47th.
Hojlund flicked past Brentford goalkeeper Mark Flekken for the winner in the 62nd.
“We don’t score enough, we are not clinical enough. But today we scored two brilliant goals,” Ten Hag said. “It’s only one win, but it can help us.”
Villa rise
Villa were up to fourth after coming back from going a goal down at Craven Cottage when Raul Jimenez fired Fulham in front in the fifth minute.
Morgan Rogers quickly leveled four minutes later and Ollie Watkins made it 2-1 in the 59th. An Issa Diop own goal in the 69th completed the scoring.
Southampton collapse
Leading 2-0 after 28 minutes at St. Mary’s Stadium, last-placed Southampton looked on course for their first league win.
Second-half goals from Facundo Buonanotte, Jamie Vardy from the penalty spot, and Jordan Ayew secured an unlikely comeback that left Southampton rooted to the bottom of the table and moved Leicester six points clear of the relegation zone.
Also, Everton won at Ipswich 2-0 to move five points above the relegation zone.
Brighton flying high
Brighton’s impressive start under coach Fabian Hurzeler continued with the win at Newcastle.
Hurzeler, born in Texas, has made his presence felt in England’s topflight following his appointment in the offseason.
Hurzeler is also working wonders with Danny Welbeck, who scored in the 35th at St. James’ Park, his fifth goal of the season.

Spurs run riot to beat West Ham
  • A third win in four Premier League games lifted Ange Postecoglou’s men to sixth in the table ahead of the later kick-offs but heaps the pressure on new West Ham coach Julen Lopetegui
  • Victory for Spurs comes after they blew a 2-0 lead in a 3-2 defeat at Brighton in their final league game before the international break

LONDON: Tottenham roared back from behind to beat West Ham 4-1 on Saturday, overrunning their London rivals in the second half to ease the pain of their recent collapse against Brighton.
A third win in four Premier League games lifted Ange Postecoglou’s men to sixth in the table ahead of the later kick-offs but heaps the pressure on new West Ham coach Julen Lopetegui.
Victory for Spurs comes after they blew a 2-0 lead in a 3-2 defeat at Brighton in their final league game before the international break.
The teams were level at half-time at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after Mohammed Kudus’s opener against the run of play was canceled out by the impressive Dejan Kulusevski.
But the match changed complexion in a frantic spell early in the second half when Yves Bissouma, an own goal from Alphonse Areola and a fourth from Son Heung-min took the game away from West Ham.
Tottenham were in control of the match early on and in-form Brennan Johnson flashed a shot narrowly wide on six minutes.
But West Ham played their part in an absorbingly open contest, giving their hosts a scare when Jarrod Bowen surged down the right and cut back to Kudus, whose stinging shot was palmed away by Guglielmo Vicario.
Tottenham captain Son went close shortly afterwards after creating space for himself but it was the visitors who broke the deadlock, making their opponents pay for not learning their lessons.
Kudus found the net for the second successive game in the 18th minute following more good work down the right by Bowen, whose shot deflected into the path of the Ghana international.
Johnson should have equalized shortly before the half-hour mark but he mistimed his header from close range, with the ball coming off his shoulder.
As Tottenham continued to press, Pedro Porro unleashed a shot from range, which took a wicked deflection but West Ham goalkeeper Areola reacted sharply to keep it out.
But Spurs got the equalizer they deserved about 10 minutes from half time.
West Ham lost the ball while on the attack and James Maddison surged forward to feed Kulusevski, whose shot came off the goalkeeper’s hand and the inside of both posts.
A measure of Tottenham’s dominance during the first half was that they won 12 corners to two for West Ham.
Postecoglou replaced Maddison with Pape Sarr at half-time in a tactical switch and Tottenham were quickly in charge.
Son played a lovely pass with the outside of his right foot to find Destiny Udogie, whose calm cut-back was met by Bissouma, who stroked the ball home in the 52nd minute.
Lopetegui prepared to make a triple change but did not have time before an own goal from Areola following a mix-up in the penalty area made the score 3-1 three minutes later.
South Korean international Son extended Tottenham’s lead when Sarr sent him clear and he beat the defender before squeezing his shot past Areola.
Kudus was shown a straight red in the final minutes after a VAR check following a melee, compounding a bad day for the visitors, who have just two wins from eight Premier League matches this season.

Ten Hag slams ‘fairy tales and lies’ as Man Utd boss comes out fighting
  • Ten Hag is widely believed to be in a fight to save his job after presiding over United’s worst start to a top-flight season since 1989-90
  • United are languishing in 14th place in the Premier League ahead of Saturday’s visit from Brentford

LONDON: Erik ten Hag defiantly slammed “fairy tales and lies” about his Manchester United future as the under-fire boss insisted he is not in danger of the sack.
Ten Hag is widely believed to be in a fight to save his job after presiding over United’s worst start to a top-flight season since 1989-90.
United are languishing in 14th place in the Premier League ahead of Saturday’s visit from Brentford, whose manager Thomas Frank has been linked with replacing the Dutchman at Old Trafford.
Without a victory in their last five games in all competitions, Ten Hag’s side have won just twice in seven league matches this term.
Another flop against Brentford will pile further pressure on Ten Hag ahead of a tricky week featuring away games at Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce in the Europa League and West Ham in the Premier League.
But the former Ajax boss is convinced he retains the support of United co-owner Jim Ratcliffe and his coterie of advisers.
“Noise is only coming from some of you in the media, creating stories and fairy tales, and bringing lies,” Ten Hag told reporters on Friday.
“I told this before the break. Several journalists probably didn’t believe me because I see the reports.
“But internal in the club it’s quiet. Of course, we are discussing, that we are unhappy with the position where we are and how we have to turn the corner, what has to happen, so what should be strategy to turn this corner.
“But ultimately we are quiet, we are composed, we stay where we are, we stick to the plan, and we are very convinced we will make it a success.”
United finished a dismal eighth in the Premier League last season, their lowest final position since 1990, triggering a Ratcliffe-led internal review into Ten Hag’s position.
But the 54-year-old eventually signed a new contract in a move seen as a show of faith during the close season.
Ten Hag won the League Cup in his first season to end United’s six-year trophy drought, then lifted the FA Cup last term in a shock final triumph against Manchester City that is credited with saving his job.
However, the embattled Ten Hag is once again engaged in a struggle to stave off the axe.
United’s inconsistent form during his reign shows no signs of improving and he acknowledged the climb back to respectability would not be easy.
“We have to climb a mountain. That is top football and sometimes you have to face challenges. I am sure we will make a success, as we did the last two seasons,” he said.
“Underneath I see good things and good stats that confirm we are in a good direction. But of course the ranking is not lying. We are where we are and that is not good enough.”
Former Manchester United assistant coach Benni McCarthy added to the scrutiny on Ten Hag recently when he said the players’ training ground performances are not replicated during matches.
Ten Hag conceded United have lacked a cutting edge during a run featuring just five goals in seven league games.
“The players did well. We won last season. Sometimes in general the players do perform well. But we have to start scoring,” he said.
“In that part we have to improve entering the final third and into the box. Now we have to take the most important step.”
