Tears of joy for Palestine players on night of history and emotion
  • The 3-0 win over Hong Kong was the team’s first AFC Asian Cup win, and confirmed progress to Round of 16

The whistle went, and for the first time in 90-plus minutes Mohamed Salah did not seem to know what to do.

That was just for a second, before the Palestine defender sank to the turf at the Abdullah bin Khalifa Stadium and cried. He was not the only one. It is not that hard to guess what he must have been thinking about and hard not to wonder if the people back in his native Gaza had any idea of what had happened in Qatar, had any idea of what their national team had managed to do in the biggest competition in the world’s biggest continent.

The message was clear however; this was all for Gaza.

Salah plays his football in Egypt but has many family members and friends in his homeland, where people are fearing for their lives amid the daily death and destruction that comes down from the skies. More than 25,000 have died, thousands more have been wounded and lost their homes.

On this field in Doha, however, something amazing happened. Here was a story about Palestine on the international stage that was not about bombs and missiles and death but about hope, pride and happiness. It is only football, but it is also so much more.

Talk about history being made in football can be cheap and cliched but then there are moments such as Tuesday that really do fit the description.

That was Palestine winning their first game at the Asian Cup, a victory that was even bigger as it sent them into the knockout stage, also for the very first time.

The 3-0 win over Hong Kong will never be forgotten. It was almost enough to send the team into second in the group above the UAE but the narrowest of goal difference margins means third place will have to do.

Oday Dabbagh, the star of the team, burst into life in this game, scoring Palestine’s first with a header before right-back Musab Al-Battat sent over another perfect cross for Zeid Qunbar to nod home.

On the hour, Tamer Seyam’s thunderous shot from outside the area bounced back off the crossbar for Dabbagh to get his second goal and his team’s third.

They have played their way into the hearts of all Palestinian fans. This was a team effort with the starting 11, the substitutes and the entire squad coming together.

This is a team that knows hardship. Players such as Salah and Mahmoud Wadi may play overseas but are from Gaza and have family and friends to worry about. Coach Makram Daboub couldn’t call up players from Gaza as he knew that they would not be able to report for duty. Preparation has been tough on and off the pitch.

“What can I say? I am so proud,” Daboub told Arab News. “We knew that we could do this but we had to work so hard in all of the three games. Against Hong Kong we knew that we had to win and knew what we needed to do, and we worked hard and managed to qualify.”

It started against Iran. Before the game kicked off, Iranian fans showed their sympathy for what the people of Gaza are going through. It was an emotional moment but then it was followed by some clinical finishing from Team Melli who ran out 4-1 winners. It looked like it was almost over before it began and it was not, in truth, a great performance from the losing team but they kept fighting and working and bounced back.

“I always had confidence in our players. Iran are one of the top teams in Asia and we played well in the second half of the game with the United Arab Emirates,” Daboub said. “We have improved in every game and while the second round will be tough, I have faith in my players.”

Australia are the most likely opponents. November’s World Cup qualifier may have gone the way of the Socceroos but it was only a 1-0 defeat and Palestine had their chances. This is also a knockout game where anything can happen. Extra time and penalties are always looming like shadows and a red card or bad decision can change everything.

But everything has already changed.

“This is for the people of Palestine and we have delivered a message to the rest of the world that these are people who deserve a better life and they love peace and freedom,” Daboub said.

And they love their football team.

  • Saudi Arabia’s oldest club head the Saudi Pro League table as they celebrate 97th birthday

DUBAI/LONDON: It is fitting that as Al-Ittihad celebrate their 97th anniversary this month, the Jeddah giants are sitting on top of the Saudi Pro League.

The past is impressive. The club was founded on Jan. 4, 1927, and is one of the oldest in Asia. Not only that, but Al-Ittihad are set to join the Club of Pioneers, a global network of historic teams headed by Sheffield FC, the oldest football club in the world that was set up in 1857.

“We are very proud to be the first Arabic country to join the Club of Pioneers on our 97th year anniversary and celebrating our great achievements as the first Saudi Football club. And we look forward to our 100 years and beyond,” Dania Al-Maeena, CEO of Al-Ittihad’s nonprofit organization, told Arab News.

Now they join the likes of Wrexham of Wales, Genoa of Italy and Royal Antwerp of Belgium to become the 32nd member.

The first silverware came all the way back in 1958 with the King’s Cup and Crown Prince’s Cup, starting to fill a trophy cabinet that has become much more packed over the decades.

Fans had to wait until 1982 to celebrate a league championship. Eight more have followed. The most recent came in 2023 when Al-Ittihad were very impressive on their way to lift the title once more and for the first time since 2009.

Any club with such domestic success want to challenge internationally, and the team in yellow and black have done just that. In 1999, fans celebrated the Asian Cup Winners Cup. The big prize, however, was always the AFC Champions League and in that competition, Ittihad have made history.

In 2004, the Red Sea club lost the first leg of the final at home, 3-1 to South Korea’s Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma. Heading into the return game, nobody gave the Saudi Arabians a chance. Yet, in perhaps the most stunning result in the history of Asian club football, Al-Ittihad shocked an expectant home crowd and the continent, by winning 5-0 to take the trophy.

If that was impressive, then so was the following year, as the club were head and shoulders above the rest. In those days, the defending champions joined the competition at the quarterfinal stage.

There was an 8-3 aggregate win over China’s Shandong Luneng and then a 7-0 thrashing of South Korea’s Busan I’Park in the semifinal. The final against 2003 champions Al-Ain of the UAE was a tougher task, but it ended in a 5-3 win over two legs. No team had previously successfully defended the Asian Champions League title.

At the time, the rest of the continent feared a dynasty being established. That did not happen but Al-Ittihad are one of Asia’s biggest and most popular clubs. Joining 50,000 fans at the King Abdullah Sports City is an unforgettable football experience.

None of this is to say that the best days are in the past. As the club enter their 97th year in existence, they are in a very healthy state indeed.

In 2023, the club ended a 14-year wait for a Saudi Pro League title, and though last season did not see a repeat performance, French coach Laurent Blanc has settled extremely well since joining in July.

He has stars including Karim Benzema, N’Golo Kante, Fabinho and Moussa Diaby at his disposal. There is also impressive domestic talent in the form of Saleh Al-Shehri, Abdulelah Al-Amri, Hassan Kadesh and many others.

The future is looking bright. After ending 2024 with nine successive league wins, they are two points clear at the top of the Saudi Pro League. There is still a long way to go but Al-Ittihad are fit for the journey.

  • In July 2023, he joined Al Nassr — where Cristiano Ronaldo plays — in the Saudi Pro League
  • Rennes said Fofana signed a four-and-a-half year deal

RENNES, France: Ivory Coast midfielder Seko Fofana ended his brief spell in Saudi Arabia to sign a long-term contract with French club Rennes on Wednesday.

The 29-year-old Fofana helped Lens to a second-place finish in Ligue 1 in 2022-23, and Rennes hope  he can provide a similar boost for the Brittany club.

Rennes said Fofana signed a four-and-a-half year deal. Financial terms were not disclosed. The team is in 12th place.

“There are some talented players at Rennes and I don't think the club is where it should be,” Fofana said in the team's announcement. “We're going to get the chance to play a series of games and show that the start of the season was below the club's potential. I hope we can turn things around very quick.”

Fofana scored 21 goals and provided 12 assists over 112 appearances for Lens.

In July 2023, he joined Al Nassr — where Cristiano Ronaldo plays — in the Saudi Pro League and then was loaned to Al-Ettifaq six months later.

Fofana previously played four seasons for Udinese in Serie A.

He has made 25 appearances for Ivory Coast and helped the team win the Africa Cup of Nations in February.

  • Arsenal extended its unbeaten streak to 12 games in all competitions

LONDON: Arsenal is back into second place in the Premier League and in no rush to add players in the transfer window.
Mikel Arteta’s team beat Brentford 3-1 on Wednesday to leapfrog Nottingham Forest and close the gap on league leader Liverpool to six points.
“If there’s an opportunity, we’ll look at it,” Arteta said of the January window. “I really like my players. I really value what we have, because it’s a lot of quality and a lot of commitment from all of them.”
That includes 17-year-old Ethan Nwaneri, who got his first Premier League start in place of the injured Bukayo Saka. The teenager was involved in second-half goals by Mikel Merino and Gabriel Martinelli.
Bryan Mbeumo put the home team ahead in the 13th minute at Gtech Community Stadium, but Gabriel Jesus made it 1-1 just before the half-hour mark — his sixth goal in the past four games.
Merino scored in the 50th minute and Martinelli added a third three minutes later.
It was Arsenal’s second straight win without Saka, who is likely to be sidelined until at least March. The England winger tore his right hamstring in a 5-1 win over Crystal Palace on Dec. 21.
Arsenal extended its unbeaten streak to 12 games in all competitions.
Liverpool has a game in hand on the Gunners, who play at Brighton on Saturday. Liverpool hosts Manchester United on Sunday.
Brentford remained in 12th place and has lost three of its past four Premier League matches.

Newcastle extend Man United’s losing run with ease

Newcastle extend Man United’s losing run with ease
  • The Magpies cruised to a 2-0 win at Old Trafford
  • Alexander Isak and Joelinton struck inside the first 19 minutes as a fifth consecutive win lifted Newcastle into fifth place

MANCHESTER: Manchester United ended a 2024 to forget with a fourth consecutive defeat as Newcastle cruised to a 2-0 win at Old Trafford to intensify the scrutiny on Red Devils’ boss Ruben Amorim.
Just two months into his tenure, Amorim conceded this week that his job is on the line unless results begin to improve.
The Portuguese has won just two of his first nine league games to leave United languishing down in 14th, just seven points above the relegation zone.
Alexander Isak and Joelinton struck inside the first 19 minutes as a fifth consecutive win lifted the Magpies into fifth.
Amorim stood aghast at what he was witnessing in the first half as Newcastle cut through the home side at will.
Just over three minutes were on the clock when Isak was afforded space inside the six-yard box to head in Lewis Hall’s cross and score for the sixth consecutive Premier League game.
United badly missed the presence of suspended captain Bruno Fernandes as the Newcastle midfield three of Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton played around the aging duo of Casemiro and Christian Eriksen with ease.
Isak blew a huge chance to double the visitors’ lead when he fluffed an attempted dink over Andre Onana and the Swedish striker also had a goal ruled out for offside.
However, it was just a matter of time before Newcastle added a second and it arrived when Joelinton burst in to meet Anthony Gordon’s cross.
Amorim responded by replacing Joshua Zirkzee with Kobbie Mainoo after just 33 minutes — a move greeted with cheers by the frustrated Old Trafford crowd.
Tonali should have made it 3-0 when he hit the post at the end of a flowing Newcastle move through the heart of the United defense.
However, Eddie Howe’s men nearly gifted the Red Devils a route back into the game before half-time.
Rasmus Hojlund missed a glorious chance to pull a goal back when the Dane fired wide with just Martin Dubravka to beat.
Casemiro then wasted an even better opportunity after Fabian Schar presented possession to Mainoo.
Amorim’s half-time pep talk did at least muster some response as United began the second half far better.
Harry Maguire’s header came back off the post before Hall blocked De Ligt’s goalbound follow-up effort.
Marcus Rashford had been restored to the United squad for the first time in five games but remained on the bench for the full 90 minutes as Amorim turned to another outcast in Alejandro Garnacho to make a difference.
But the Argentine international was introduced just as Newcastle had ridden the storm and began to assert their control once more.
A third consecutive home league defeat for the first time since 1979 is the latest in the list of sorry statistics that have marked United’s decade of decline.
The fear for Amorim is that the losing run only looks set to continue into 2025.
A daunting trip to runaway league leaders Liverpool awaits on Sunday before United travel to Arsenal in the FA Cup third round.
