Al-Rajhi suffers title-ending crash on marathon Dakar Rally 48-hour stage
  • 61-year-old, three-time Dakar winner, Carlos Sainz leads general standings by more than a quarter of an hour

SHUBAYTAH: Carlos Sainz benefited from race leader Yazeed Al-Rajhi’s title-ending crash and Stephane Peterhansel breaking down in the desert, to take the provisional lead after the first part of the Dakar Rally sixth stage on Thursday.
The stage is an unprecedented two-day marathon around Shubaytah — a 780km loop in the kingdom’s vast Empty Quarter with more than 600km of specials for motorcycles and nearly 550km for cars.
On Thursday, it was the veteran Spaniard Sainz who showed his mettle and was leading when the day’s action stopped at 16:00 (13:00GMT) local time with competitors spending the night at the nearest of seven bivouacs dotted around the dunes.
The 61-year-old three-time Dakar winner leads the general standings by more than a quarter of an hour on his Audi teammate Matthias Ekstrom of Sweden.
The Prodrive drivers are trailing with Qatar’s defending champion Nasser Al-Attiyah losing time and sitting some 22 minutes off the pace.
France’s Sebastien Loeb remains fourth overall at almost 37min.
Nine-time world rally champion Sainz had attempted a daring tactical move on Wednesday, deliberately losing 40 minutes to start behind the leaders on Thursday, to follow their tracks and avoid opening in the dunes.
Al-Rajhi and Peterhansel both lost out.
The 42-year-old Saudi Toyota driver Al-Eahji started the morning leading the standings but disaster struck when he was unable to repair his Hilux after an accident which occurred 51km into the stage.
“The car did a barrel roll and now is damaged,” explained Al-Rajhi, who finished third in last year’s race.
And Dakar Rally veteran Peterhansel was stranded in the middle of the desert at midday, the victim of a hydraulic failure.
“We had a puncture and the hydraulic jack system started playing up,” said Peterhansel, who notched up a record-equalling 50th car stage win on Sunday.
“We don’t have a hand jack so we don’t know how we’re going to change the wheel,” he said.
“With the damage to the hydraulic system, I’ve lost the power steering and I don’t know how we’re going to manage to pull through.”
Whatever happens, the Dakar is lost to the man with a record 14 victories, six on motorcycles and eight in cars.
Thursday and Friday’s 48-hour stage is the last big part of the first week, before the rest day on Saturday in Riyadh.
In the motorbike category, Frenchman Adrien van Beveren led the sixth stage at the midway point with his American Honda teammate Ricky Brabec moving into the overall race lead.
Van Beveren finished the day 1min 21sec ahead of Brabec with Australian Toby Price third at 1min 49sec.
Chilean rider Pablo Quintanilla, winner of Wednesday’s stage, ran out of fuel about 10km from the first refueling point, losing almost an hour and a half.

Atletico snatch late win at Barca to top La Liga
  • Barcelona started the season in superb form but have stumbled in recent weeks and have now won just one of their last seven league games

BARCELONA: Atletico Madrid came from behind to snatch a last-gasp 2-1 victory over Barcelona and claim leadership of La Liga on Saturday.
Pedri sent the Catalans ahead but second-half goals from Rodrigo De Paul and Alexander Sorloth helped Diego Simeone’s side move three points clear at the top of the table, having played one match fewer than Barca.
Hansi Flick’s side dominated at the Olympic stadium but Atletico clung on before claiming a 12th consecutive victory across all competitions with Sorloth’s stoppage-time strike.
Barcelona started the season in superb form but have stumbled in recent weeks and have now won just one of their last seven league games.
Champions Real Madrid face Sevilla on Sunday and can also move ahead of Barcelona with a victory.
Barcelona controlled the first half, with their press suffocating Atletico, but struggled to construct many chances.
Raphinha missed with an early header and had another effort blocked, while Jan Oblak fielded a stinging Inigo Martinez effort.
The hosts appealed for a penalty when the ball struck Giovanni Simeone’s arm in the area but it would have been a harsh punishment for the Atletico coach’s son.
Barcelona took the lead after 30 minutes with Pedri both the architect and scorer of the goal.
The Spain midfielder burst forward with the ball and fed Gavi, who tried to turn and inadvertently nudged the ball back to the surging Pedri, who entered the box and slotted past Oblak.
Barcelona should have doubled their lead early in the second half, with Fermin Lopez denied by Oblak’s legs before Raphinha hit the crossbar.
Pedri played in the Brazilian winger with a fine pass over the top and Raphinha lofted the ball over the goalkeeper but it struck the woodwork on its way down.
Moments later Atletico were level, with Marc Casado’s misguided backheel clearance falling to De Paul on the edge of the area.
The in-form Argentine midfielder finished with a firm low effort into the bottom corner for his third goal in his last four league games.
In the final stages both teams tried to snatch a winner, with La Liga’s top goalscorer Robert Lewandowski missing from point-blank range, although Ferran Torres appeared offside in the build-up.
At the other end Inaki Pena made a fine save to keep Pablo Barrios at bay, while Oblak saved from Raphinha after another superb Pedri ball.
The outstanding Canarian midfielder had a chance to score himself but Oblak again proved too hard to beat, and his efforts did not go unrewarded.
Deep in stoppage time Nahuel Molina crossed for regular super-sub Sorloth to strike and ensure Atletico will be top of the pile at Christmas.

‘Hate it’: Tien beats friend to set-up NextGen final against Fonseca
  • Sunday’s final will feature the two youngest players in the eight-man field with Fonseca having the advantage of already beating Tien

JEDDAH: Learner Tien defeated close friend Alex Michelsen to reach the NextGen ATP Finals title match on Saturday but admitted he “hated” having had to face his American compatriot.
The 19-year-old left-hander, ranked at 122 in the world, came through 2-4, 4-2, 1-4, 4-0, 4-1 in a semifinal which boasted tennis legend Rafael Nadal among the spectators.
“I can’t put it into words right now,” said Tien who hit 21 winners past the 41st-ranked Michelsen.
“I am really happy with the win but I hate it against him, but that is just how it goes. I started smiling when I came out here and saw him on the other side of the net, but I am really happy to get through and think I played really well.”
Tien will face Brazil’s Joao Fonseca, the lowest-ranked player in the draw at 145, who eased into the final by seeing off France’s Luca Van Assche 4-2, 4-2, 4-1.
Fonseca is the second youngest man to make the NextGen final after current world number one and two-time major winner Jannik Sinner who took the title in 2019.
The Brazilian has won all of his four matches in Jeddah this week, a run which included the biggest win of his career against 20th-ranked Arthur Fils of France.
“Today was a great match. I played really solidly,” said Fonseca after his one-hour victory.
“He didn’t have too many chances because I was playing so aggressively and making all the shots. There is one more match to go, and I hope I can for it.”
Sunday’s final will feature the two youngest players in the eight-man field with Fonseca having the advantage of already beating Tien during the group stages.

MUSCAT: The Ghala Golf Club in Oman welcomed players and officials for the official launch of the Gulf Cooperation Council Golf Championship, which runs Saturday to Tuesday.

The tournament features five Gulf nations: Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain and Oman.

The event was inaugurated by Sayyid Azan bin Qais Al-Said, vice president of the Oman Olympic Committee and chairman of the Oman Golf Association.

During the opening ceremony, Ahmed bin Faisal Al-Jahdhami, secretary-general of the OGA, highlighted the championship’s role in nurturing and developing emerging talents in the region, as well as enhancing the skills of both male and female players.

He added that hosting the tournament demonstrated Oman’s commitment, through the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Youth and the OGA, to strengthening Gulf ties and advancing the regional standard of golf.

“This championship serves as a significant milestone in preparing a new generation of players capable of competing on continental and international stages,” he said.

  • Frenchman emphasized that his team was aiming for significant results rather than merely gaining experience

KUWAIT CITY: Herve Renard, the Saudi national football team’s head coach, expressed confidence on Saturday in his team’s readiness to compete at the 26th Arabian Gulf Cup, which gets underway on Sunday.

Speaking at a press conference, the Frenchman emphasized that his team was aiming for significant results rather than merely gaining experience.

“We are here to participate effectively and win,” Renard said. “This tournament provides a great platform to work with the players and prepare them for future competitions.”

Renard also said the tournament was a good way to enhance the technical and physical capabilities of his players.

He provided updates on key players, confirming that defender Hassan Tambakti was fully ready for action. However, he said Salem Al-Dawsari was still working to regain full fitness.

Renard praised Al-Dawsari’s dedication to his recovery process, saying it demonstrated his commitment to the team.

Meanwhile, striker Firas Al-Brikan is dealing with an injury, and his participation will depend on further medical evaluations.

Acknowledging the challenges of the competition, Renard said: “I accepted this challenge because I believe in the players’ capabilities. We must work with team spirit and focus on improvement in the coming period.”

The Saudi team get their campaign up and running against Bahrain on Sunday, and Renard stressed the importance of delivering a strong performance to set the tone for the tournament.
