RIYADH: King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on Wednesday sent cables of condolences and sympathy to Emperor Naruhito of Japan following a powerful earthquake that killed at least 62 people in his country on Monday, Saudi Press Agency reported.

The cables also sent condolences and sympathy to the families of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery, SPA added.

The 7.5 magnitude quake on January 1 that rattled Ishikawa prefecture on the main island of Honshu triggered tsunami waves more than a meter high, sparked a major fire and tore apart roads.

The toll was expected to climb as Japanese rescuers scrambled to search for survivors on Wednesday as authorities warned of landslides and heavy rain hampering the efforts.
