English soccer club Barnsley removed from the FA Cup after fielding an ineligible player
  • The third-division team said an “administrative error” was to blame for fielding the unnamed player
  • The club have fully cooperated with the investigation and have accepted the FA’s decision

LONDON: English soccer club Barnsley were kicked out of this season’s FA Cup on Wednesday for fielding an ineligible player.
The third-division team said an “administrative error” was to blame for fielding the unnamed player in their first round replay against Horsham on Nov. 14. Barnsley won the game 3-0.
“The club have fully cooperated with the investigation and have accepted the FA’s decision,” Barnsley said in a statement. “We would like to apologize to our fans, players and staff for this regrettable error. This mistake — although unintentional — falls way below the high standards we set at this club and is simply not what you deserve.”
The FA said non-league club Horsham had been reinstated in the competition and have advanced to the second round, where they will play fourth-division team Sutton on Dec. 2.
Premier League teams enter the FA Cup in the third round.
Neither the FA nor Barnsley immediately responded to requests to identify the player, who the governing body said was ineligible because he had not been “correctly” registered in time for the original game on Nov. 3, which ended in a 3-3 draw.
“Barnsley admitted this charge and acknowledged that the breach had occurred,” the FA said.
Barnsley said they had conducted an internal investigation and “put safeguards in place to ensure this will never happen again.”

Uruguay star Luis Suarez announces retirement from international football
  • “Friday will be my last match for my country,” an emotional Suarez, 37, told a press conference

MONTEVIDEO: Uruguay icon Luis Suarez announced his retirement from international football on Monday, confirming that he will hang up his boots following Friday’s 2026 World Cup qualifier against Paraguay in Montevideo.
“Friday will be my last match for my country,” an emotional Suarez, 37, told a press conference.
“It was not an easy decision to make, but I do it with the peace of mind that I will give my maximum until the very last game of my (Uruguay) career.”
The former Barcelona and Liverpool striker is widely regarded as one of the greatest players of his generation and will retire from international football as Uruguay’s top scorer with 69 goals from 142 appearances.
Suarez, who was infamously kicked out of the 2014 World Cup after being handed a four-month ban for biting Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini, made his debut for Uruguay in 2007.
The Inter Miami forward helped Uruguay capture the 2011 Copa America, where he was named player of the tournament, and would eventually represent the South American country in nine major tournaments.
Suarez said Monday that inspiring Uruguay to that Copa crown had been the highpoint of his career.
“I wouldn’t trade the Copa America title for anything,” he said. “It was the best moment of my career. I wouldn’t trade it for anything.”
A dynamic, skilful attacker with a lethal eye for goal, Suarez was also never far from controversy.
As well as the biting incident that ended his involvemment in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, he was also one of the villains of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, when his cynical handball on the goal-line denied Ghana what would have been a late winner in the quarter-finals.
Suarez was sent off for that offense and Ghana subsequently missed the ensuing penalty, allowing Uruguay to sneak into the semifinals after a penalty shoot-out.
Controversy also dogged Suarez throughout his club career, notably in 2011 when he was handed an eight-game ban by authorities in England for allegedly racially abusing Manchester United’s France star Patrice Evra.
Suarez would later help Uruguay qualify for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, and also featured in this summer’s Copa America where he was used largely as a substitute by coach Marcelo Bielsa. He scored his 69th international goal in a third place play-off victory over Canada.

‘Help me find him’: Al-Ahli star Saint-Maximin impressed by loyal young fan in pouring rain

RIYADH: “Help me find him please” was the reaction of Al-Ahli striker Allan Saint-Maximin after he saw a video of a young supporter kissing the team badge in the pouring rain outside the club’s store in Jeddah.
The post on X by the Ahli favorite led to an outpouring of respect for the player, who is currently on loan to Turkish side Fenerbahçe.
The video shows a young supporter wearing the club’s famous green kit amid a heavy downpour and lightning. He kisses the badge then gives a thumbs up.
The poster of the video, Waleed Saeed, told Saint-Maximin that he had tracked down the youngster’s details.
“I found the boy, I will contact with you. Thank You Maximin,” Saeed posted.
“Thanks Alan, you are still one of us,” said one reply to the Frenchman’s tweet. “We Al-Ahli fans love you and know your love to Al-Ahli,” said another.
Saint-Maximin arrived in Jeddah from English Premier League side Newcastle in July 2023, and netted 4 goals in 31 appearances for The Royals.
There was a severe weather warning in place for Jeddah until Tuesday morning. Heavy rain, thunder and lightning impacted the city on Monday as the high summer heat begins to give way to cooler temperatures on the Red Sea coast.

‘Great moment’ for Mbappe as he scores first La Liga goals for Real Madrid

MADRID: Kylian Mbappe answered his critics in style as he netted his first La Liga goals to give Real Madrid a 2-0 win over Real Betis at the Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday which sends them second in the table.

Since scoring in the UEFA Super Cup against Atalanta, new signing Mbappe had failed to find the back of the net in Madrid’s opening three games in La Liga, prompting criticism in the Spanish press.

Mbappe was made to wait for his goals as he squandered a series of chances, finally finding the back of the net in the 67th minute, sweeping the ball past the Betis goalkeeper with his left foot after a well-timed back-heel from Fede Valverde.

Eight minutes later the France captain added a second from the penalty spot and was cheered off the field when he was replaced by Luka Modric in the 84th minute.

“It’s a great moment,” Mbappe told Spanish television after the match.

“I was really hoping to score at the Bernabeu, in this mythical stadium, the best in the world. But the most important thing was to win.

“After the match against Las Palmas, we knew we had to win. And that’s what we did today, in a difficult match. But we’re Real, and in the end we win, and with style.”

The smile on Mbappe’s face was in contrast to the concern that had been shown since scoring his first goal and winning his first trophy in Warsaw on August 14.

On Saturday, coach Carlo Ancelotti had hit back at the criticism, insisting that his star recruit was settling in well and he reasserted at the press conference after the match that “we never put Mbappe under pressure to score goals.”

“He was very effective in the box, he had many opportunities. I think it is important for him to score, but we appreciate more the work for the team,” added Ancelotti, who confirmed that Vinicius let the French striker take the penalty.

Ancelotti also spread his praise across the entire team which has taken a while to gel this season.

“Anxiety, frustration, we don’t have them,” said Ancelotti.

“We have desire, motivation to try to do better. Today we did better. I think we deserved to win. It was a good game, much more supportive among all, and we arrive at the (international) break feeling good.”

Madrid’s win takes them second in the table with eight points, four behind early leaders Barcelona who eviscerated Real Valladolid 7-0 on Saturday to make it four wins from four in La Liga under new coach Hansi Flick.

Atletico Madrid are third after a late victory in Bilbao on Saturday while Villarreal are fourth, both of them also on eight points.

Girona are fifth after picking up their second win of the season in Seville.

Ivan Martin put Girona ahead in the 41st minute with Abel Ruiz wrapping up a 2-0 win over Sevilla with a penalty in the 73rd minute.

Goals from Carlos Vicente and Luka Romero gave Alaves a 2-0 win over Las Palmas while Osasuna are in seventh after an exciting 3-2 win at home against Celta Vigo.

Ante Budimir teed up Flavien Boyomo to put the home side ahead after 21 minutes but the lead was short-lived as Borja Iglesias levelled for Celta.

A Carlos Dominguez own goal just before the break put Osasuna back in front with Abel Bretones adding a third just after the hour.

Celta were reduced to 10 men when Alfonso Gonzalez was sent off four minutes from time but an own goal from Moi Gomez was small consolation in the last minute.

  • The goal was Müller’s 150th in his Bundesliga career and he has now scored in 16 consecutive German top-tier seasons going back to the 2009-10 campaign

MUNICH: Harry Kane converted a penalty and Thomas Müller scored in his club-record 710th game as Bayern Munich beat Freiburg 2-0 in the Bundesliga on Sunday.
Müller replaced new signing Michael Olize in the 59th minute to break a tie with goalkeeping great Sepp Maier on 709 career games in all competitions for Bayern.
Müller scored in the 78th when he controlled a cross from Serge Gnabry with one touch to take the ball away from Freiburg’s Maximilian Eggestein, then used his second touch to slam it past goalkeeper Florian Müller.
“Records aren’t so important for me, to be honest, instead it’s that I scored a really beautiful goal,” Müller told broadcaster DAZN. “Outstanding technique and then it goes in too, that’s what’s fun for me.”
The goal was Müller’s 150th in his Bundesliga career and he has now scored in 16 consecutive German top-tier seasons going back to the 2009-10 campaign.
The 34-year-old forward was setting a club record for the second time in as many games after marking his 474th Bundesliga game for Bayern last week. That also broke a tie with Maier.
Earlier, Kane’s first Bundesliga goal of the season gave Bayern the lead from the penalty spot after Kane won a spot kick when he headed the ball onto Freiburg defender Max Rosenfelder’s outstretched arm.
Rosenfelder had seemed to raise the arm to steady himself as Kane jumped while holding his other shoulder. The referee didn’t give the penalty on the field but acted after viewing a video replay.
Deep into added time, new Bayern signing João Palhinha gave away a penalty for handball but Freiburg’s Lucas Höler fired over the bar. That ensured Bayern didn’t concede in Vincent Kompany’s first home game as coach.
Bayern is one of three Bundesliga teams to win both of their opening games this season, along with Heidenheim and Leipzig, which ended champion Bayer Leverkusen’s 15-month unbeaten league run Saturday.
HEIDENHEIM ROUTS AUGSBURG
Another Bayern player scored Sunday as on-loan Paul Wanner converted a penalty for Heidenheim on his team’s way to a 4-0 win. The 18-year-old Wanner scored the spot kick in the ninth minute after a handball by an Augsburg defender. Léo Scienza made it 2-0 in the 30th before second-half goals from Adrian Beck and Maximilian Breunig secured the win.
Heidenheim has won all five of its games in all competitions this season. It’s only the team’s second Bundesliga season and its first in continental competition after qualifying for the Europa Conference League, where it will play Chelsea.
Heidenheim’s United States national team forward Lennard Maloney went off injured shortly before half ime after a collision with Augsburg’s Fredrik Jensen, whose knee struck Maloney in the back as they challenged for the ball at a corner.
