RIYADH: To raise environmental awareness, the King Abdulaziz Royal Reserve began implementing the “School Reserve” initiative in five educational complexes near the reserve on Oct 26.
The “School Reserve” initiative is an interactive project for students to motivate them to preserve the environment and raise the level of their environmental volunteer work, with their volunteer hours counted for the national volunteer work platform of the Ministry of Human Resources and Human Development.
The initiative will educate more than 500 students at all levels of public education; primary, middle and secondary.
The reserve established a series of educational meetings for the reserve school students, which included educating them on the best methods of planting seedlings and how to care for them.
The reserve will work to follow up and evaluate the school reserves through a team of specialists, to ensure that the education complexes are following program protocol.
The initiative comes within the framework of the royal reserve’s efforts to empower and involve the local community in developing vegetation, raising awareness among younger generations, and enhancing their connection to the surrounding environment by global environmental practices.
The King Abdulaziz Royal Reserve is one of the seven reserves established by royal decree. It holds governmental membership in the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
The royal reserve was established in 2018 to preserve vulnerable and endangered plant and animal species, and provide access to the environment and natural resources. It encompasses Al-Tanhat, Al-Khafs and Noura parks, as well as parts of the Al-Summan plateau and the Al-Dahna desert, and covers about 28,000 sq. km.
