RIYADH: Al-Shabab went top of the Saudi Women’s Premier League after defeating reigning champions Al-Nassr 2-0 at home on Sunday night.

Both goals were scored by Venezuelan international Oriana Altuve in the first half.

The first came from a penalty in the 27th minute, while the second came after a fine run through the Al-Nassr defense in the 34th minute.

The derby win saw a measure of revenge for Al-Shabab after a 4-1 loss to their city rivals in Matchday 9 of last season, a game that saw Al-Nassr crowned the first-ever champions of the Saudi Women’s Premier League.

Al-Shabab now lead the table with a maximum of six points from two matches after an opening weekend 1-0 win over Al-Ahli. Al-Ittihad sit in second with four points while Al-Nassr are in third with three points.

The next round of matches will see Al-Shabab meet Al-Ittihad on Friday, while Al-Nassr will take on the Eastern Flames on the same day.
