  • MoU looks to establish mutual recognition of calibration certificates and metrological marks

LONDON: Officials from the Jordanian and Iraqi quality control bodies have signed an agreement aimed at streamlining the intra-trade in goods.

The memorandum of understanding will see the Jordan Standards and Metrology Organization and the Iraqi Central Organization for Standardization and Quality Control working to bolster technical and scientific cooperation and joint training in specifications, standards, and conformity assessment, the Jordan News Agency reported on Monday.

Under the terms of the deal the organizations will also look to establish mutual recognition of calibration certificates and metrological marks, while collaborating on inter-comparison of tests, laboratory examinations, calibration, and dispute resolution.

In addition, they will coordinate their countries’ positions in regional and international forums.

JSMO Director General Abeer Al-Zuhair said the MoU was part of Jordan and Iraq’s wider efforts to achieve economic integration and cooperation.

Several Jordanian Iraqi projects — such as the joint economic zone, the establishment of an industrial border city, and the development of the oil pipeline from Basra to Aqaba — are being implemented to boost links between the two nations and work within the framework of the tripartite cooperation mechanism between Jordan, Iraq, and Egypt.
