RIYADH: Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation Hissein Brahim Taha on Sunday urged member states, humanitarian organizations, and the international community to support rescue work being led by authorities in earthquake-hit Morocco.

More than 2,000 people are thought to have died and thousands of others have been injured after a huge quake rocked an area around 72 km southwest of Marrakesh.

Praising Moroccan King Mohammed VI’s swift response to the disaster, Taha passed on his condolences to the families of those killed or still missing.

Friday’s 6.8-magnitude quake, the strongest ever recorded in the North African country, has destroyed entire villages in the Atlas Mountains.

On Sunday, Moroccans turned out in their numbers at hospitals in Marrakesh to donate blood.
