AMMAN: Road accidents are hitting Jordan’s economy to the tune of 350 million dinars ($494 million) annually, Jordan News Agency reported on Tuesday.
Jordan had 169,409 traffic-related incidents in 2022, resulting in 562 deaths and 17,096 victims suffering injuries.
Some 46 percent of those injured were between the ages of 18 and 35 and this age group caused 43 percent of total accidents.
Brig. Firas Doueiri, director of traffic police at the Public Security Department, said that human error accounted for 98.8 percent of all accidents.
The most common mistakes are lane violations, not adhering to safe driving distances, and a failure to take necessary precautions on roads.
The traffic department is focused on utilizing technological innovations to manage issues more efficiently, the official said.
