JEDDAH: Four Assad regime soldiers and two Iran-backed fighters were killed on Monday in new Israeli airstrikes on targets in Syria.

The strikes hit areas near Damascus airport, Dimas airport and Kisweh, all close to the Syrian capital. They destroyed weapons and ammunition depots belonging to Iran-backed groups, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The Observatory is a war monitor in Britain that has a a wide network of informants inside Syria.

During more than a decade of war in Syria, Israel has launched hundreds of airstrikes on its territory, primarily targeting Iran-backed forces and Hezbollah fighters as well as Syrian army positions.

Israel has repeatedly said it would not allow Iran, which supports the Assad regime, to expand its footprint there.

With Iranian and Russian support, Assad’s government has clawed back much of the territory it had lost to opposition forces early in the conflict.

On July 19, Israeli airstrikes near Damascus killed three pro-regime fighters and injured four others. Syria’s foreign ministry condemned that attack “in the strongest terms.” It called on the UN and the Security Council to “take immediate action” to oblige Israel “to desist from these criminal policies.”

Previous Israeli airstrikes have put both Damascus and Aleppo airports out of service. In late March and early April, Israel stepped up its strikes on Syria with four raids on regime-held areas in less than a week.
