Author: The Talk

“The Talk” by Darrin Bell was a memoir written in graphic novel form.
This book is absolutely critical as it relates to understanding the way racism is woven into the fabric of American society and how it has always impacted people of color.
For the majority of his story, Bell illustrates his internal struggles as they pertain to his race and how much of his life has been dictated by it, making it a great entryway into a conversation about race relations in the US for those who are not
as familiar with the topic.
Bell was six years old when his mother told him he could not have a realistic water gun. She said she feared for his safety, that police tend to think of little Black boys as older and less innocent than they really are.
Through evocative illustrations and sharp humor, Bell examines how “The Talk” shaped intimate and public moments from childhood to adulthood.
“It’s no wonder Bell won the Pulitzer, he’s an amazing artist and amazing story teller,” said a review on Goodreads.com.
