MAKKAH: Saudi Tourism Minister Ahmed Al-Khateeb was seen rowing a boat in the Wadi Taraj Lake during his visit to Asir, with photos of the minister going viral on social media.

The images of the picturesque landscapes in Asir showed the minister rowing accompanied by Deputy Minister of Tourism Princess Haifa bint Mohammed and another official.

“The lake is located in Wadi Traj Dam in Tanumah, Asir with a 4 sq. km area,” said Mohammed Al-Tuhami, director of Husaak Co. which is in charge of supervising events on the lake.

“Activities in the lake started 2 years ago, with diverse events aiming to provide a distinguished tourism mark compared to other types of sports. This is the first of its kind … for Saudis in the region,” he added.

Al-Tuhami told Arab News: “The Asir Development Authority provided all the necessary support and means to ensure the success of the events, and prepared the infrastructure.

“Diverse and multiple use boats are available, including single, double, and quadruple boats, where the helmsman uses oars to steer the boat. Oars are usually made of light material of solid wood or synthetic materials,” he said.

“Rowing is one of the oldest … water sports around the world. We are aiming to simulate global experiences with ensuring the arrival of boats to the finish line, training rowers on sailing the boat, and facilitating this sport in Wadi Taraj using specialized boats.

“Marina area is now witnessing events and huge turnout from the people of the region, in addition to tourists,” he said, adding that those willing to participate should register on the website of Asir Season or Husaak.

Al-Tuhami also said that the feedback received went beyond his expectations, namely the reaction of Al-Khateeb, who encouraged and supported the initiative and gave it his blessing, given that the site is 1,800 meters above sea level.

“Rowing in Taraj Dam Lake shaped Tanumah aesthetically and revealed its splendor. Tanumah is known for its geographical nature, vegetation, and moderate weather, which enhanced the existing activities including hiking. Therefore, people participate in large numbers, namely those wishing to participate in water games,” said Mohammed Al-Shehri, a local resident.

Al-Shehri added that rowing requires physical strength, skills, and coordination, but it is not complicated, and one can easily get better at it through practice.
