  • Officials highlight funding needed to ensure agency continues to provide essential services to Palestinian refugees

AMMAN:  Jordan’s Deputy Prime Minister Ayman Safadi and Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency Philippe Lazzarini met on Tuesday to discuss attempts to bridge the agency’s financial deficit.

Safadi and Lazzarini highlighted the need for the international community to take practical steps to provide the necessary financial support to the agency so that it continues to provide its services to refugees.

Safadi said that financially boosting the agency and protecting its ability to carry out its UN mandate are necessities for providing a decent living standard for refugees, as well as an investment in security and stability.

The deputy prime minister emphasized the importance of UNRWA’s role in providing education, healthcare, and humanitarian aid to Palestinian refugees until they are guaranteed the right to return and compensation in accordance with international law resolutions and within the framework of a comprehensive solution to the Palestinian cause based on the two-state solution.

Lazzarini praised Jordan’s “key role” in organizing financial and political support for the agency as one of the largest refugee host countries.
