What We Are Reading Today: Biting the Hand by Julia Lee

Biting the Hand is a memoir filled with honesty, truth and so much reflection about immigrant parents and their children’s responsibilities.

Julia Lee writes her experience as a Korean American.

In a country that mostly treats race like a binary, Lee analyzes where she fits in, and how her parents’ trauma, affect her (and her sister).

In some ways, she has the stereotypical story of immigrant parents, high pressure, Ivy League schools, etc.  In other ways, she makes it clear she’s a unique individual with passions all her own.

As she moves through her story and her emotions, Lee delves deep into cultural phenomena as well as how that feels up against mainstream American culture.

Lee is a great storyteller as well as a super-interesting cultural theorist, said a review on Goodreads.com.

“While reading Biting the Hand, it was easy to feel the emotions the author was trying to convey and if you are not familiar with Asian/Asian American experiences within the US, you will certainly gain a new perspective,” said a review on Goodreads.com.
