RIYADH: A prosthetics project implemented by the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center aims to help amputees and victims of mines planted by the Houthi militia all over Yemen, as well as provide them with necessary services for free.
Those services include fitting high-quality prosthetics, rehabilitating victims so they can work and lead a normal life, and training local cadres in this field. Over 25,000 individuals have benefited from this project to date.
KSrelief has supported the prosthetics center in Aden by providing the main equipment, ensuring building maintenance, providing physical rehabilitation and follow-up, and enhancing the capabilities of medical and technical cadres. The project has benefited 5,979 individuals in the governorate.
Similar support has been provided in the governorates of Taiz, where 8,530 people have benefited; Marib, where 8,132 have benefited; and Seiyun, where 3,331 have benefited.
The project is part of the medical services that Saudi Arabia, represented by KSrelief, offers Yemeni patients.
“A person with prosthetics can lead a very normal life. Prosthetics are fitted after measuring each limb and taking into account patients’ preferences in terms of the type of limbs they want, so the prosthetics would perform the same function as the natural organ before amputation,” Jeddah-based prosthetist Salem Massoud told Arab News.
“There are many types of prosthetics. Some replace the hands, while others replace the feet. Some types are also allocated for the bottom of the knee joint, the kneecap and the pelvic joint. This also applies to the upper limbs. All these types aim to help the patient regain normalcy, walk and move very smoothly,” he added.
“Prices differ depending on the quality of the materials and prosthetics used. There are hydraulic prosthetics, fixed prosthetics and electronic prosthetics with microprocessors.
“In general, the prices of these prosthetics range from $2,000 to $18,000. The more the manufacturing and specifications incorporate modern technology, the higher the price.”
