Saudi Arabia leads Arab world’s condemnation of Azerbaijan embassy attack in Iran

DUBAI: Saudi Arabia condemned the armed attack which took place at the Azerbaijan embassy in Iran on Friday, resulting in the death of one person.

The kingdom’s ministry of foreign affairs released a statement ‘calling for respecting diplomatic missions and punishing the perpetrators’, reported state agency SPA.

The incident, which resulted in the injury of several people, received worldwide condemnation.

Secretary General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), Dr. Nayef Falah Mubarak Al-Hajraf, released a similar statement condemning the attack in Tehran.

Al-Hajraf stressed the ‘need to protect diplomatic facilities per the diplomatic norms and charters that regulate diplomatic work.’

He also affirmed the GCC’s solidarity with Azerbaijan and its people, offering condolences to the victims’ families and the country’s government.

Meanwhile, the UAE strongly condemned the terrorist attack that targeted the Azerbaijan’s embassy in a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MoFAIC) on state agency WAM.

In the statement it ‘stressed the obligation to protect diplomatic missions in accordance with the norms and charters that govern diplomatic work.’

The UAE affirmed its rejection of all forms of violence and terrorism aimed and undermining security and stability, said MoFAIC’s statement.

Kuwait’s foreign ministry also denounced the attack and affirmed its ‘principled and unwavering position that decries violence and terrorism’ while expressing solidarity with Azerbaijan, said the statement published on state agency KUNA.

Bahrain and Jordan had similar sentiments, with both countries condemning the attack that resulted in the death of an employee at the Azerbaijan embassy.

Both nations offered their condolences to the victims’ families and expressed solidarity with the transcontinental country by rejecting all acts of ‘violence and terrorism in all its forms.’
