KHAYBAR: Set up by the Royal Commission for AlUla, the Khaybar Volcano Camp has opened for nature enthusiasts and explorers, the Saudi Press Agency reported.
Home to a dormant volcano, the camp is close to Jabal Al-Qadr, which has been classified among the world’s top 100 geological sites by the International Union of Geosciences and the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.
The camp has been designed in harmony with the surrounding volcanic terrain, without damaging the environment. Visitors can enjoy a range of safe activities including hiking and climbing.
Project Supervisor Faisal Al-Qarni said the Khaybar Volcano Camp offers a unique recreational experience because it is situated among lava fields. Guests can book their trips online, he added.
Another important natural landmark in Harrat Khaybar is Umm Jirsan cave. Umm Jirsan is a long underground lava tube, tilting from east to west, with multiple openings, inside which many tunnels and narrow and wide grooves can be found, in addition to overhangs of black basalt and calcite.
The cave is about 1,500 meters long, 45 meters wide, with a maximum height of 12 meters, making it the Kingdom’s longest lava tube system.
The tube receives torrential water through its openings, and water flows through and collects sand, dust, and clay, and some plants and trees grow inside it.
Umm Jirsan is cold in summer and warm in winter, which is what makes it a top destination for both humans and animals.
