RIYADH: Doctors in Riyadh have successfully operated on Saudi footballer Yasser Al-Shahrani after he sustained serious injuries during Kingdom’s historic match against Argentina at the World Cup in Qatar.
Al-Shahrani was airlifted from Doha’s Hamad Medical City to Riyadh on Wednesday morning for treatment after he was involved in a horrific collision with Green Falcons keeper Mohammed al-Owais.
He suffered a fractured jaw and to the left of his face. He was also suffering internal bleeding that needed rapid surgical intervention.
The operation took place in the National Guard Hospital at the King Abdulaziz Medical City in Riyadh where he is recovering, according to an official statement released by the Saudi national team.
“[Al-Shahrani] underwent a successful surgery on his pancreatic gland on Wednesday afternoon,” read the Green Falcons’ statement on the defender’s medical progress.
“We wish him a speedy recovery.”

Saudi Arabia claimed a historic 2-1 win over Argentina on Tuesday, ending Argentina’s 36-match unbeaten record.
It was also the first time in footballing history that the South American giants were beaten by an Asian team.
