Al-Ahly of Egypt defeated Saudi team Mudhar 36-30 the opening day of the International Handball Federation Super Globe 2022 in Dammam on Tuesday.
In the last match of the day, following the opening ceremony, the African champions led 18-17 at the break before stretching their lead to six points by the end to take early control of Group B.
Organized by the Saudi Ministry of Sport, along with the Saudi Arabian Handball Federation, the tournament features 12 teams and continues until Oct. 23. This year marks the 15th, and largest, staging of the championship, which was launched in 1997.
The action began on Tuesday morning with Brazilian team Taubate recording a 32-28 victory over Al-Kuwait Club in Group C. In the day’s other matches, Barcelona of Spain beat Mexico’s Club Ministros 50-18 in Group D, while reigning champions SC Magdeburg of Germany defeated Sydney University 41-23 in Group A.
Wednesday’s schedule of matches is: Al-Kuwait (Kuwait) vs. Kielce (Poland); Club Ministros (Mexico) vs. Esperance (Tunisia); Sydney Uni (Australia) vs. Al-Khaleej (Saudi Arabia); Mudhar (Saudi Arabia) vs. SL Benfica (Portugal).
