RIYADH: The Embassy of India in Riyadh celebrated the country’s 75th Independence Day with much fanfare, to mark the historic date of Aug. 15, 1947, when British rule ended.
“The event had an enthusiastic participation of about 700 people which included diplomats, Saudi nationals, journalists, and members of the Indian community,” according to a statement released by the embassy.
The celebration began with the hoisting of the national flag by Charge d’Affaires N. Ram Prasad.
Prasad then read out President of India Droupadi Murmu’s message to the nation and Indians residing around the world.
The flag ceremony was followed by a cultural program presented by members of the diaspora in the Kingdom.
In Jeddah, Consul General Mohammed Shahid Alam hoisted the flag in the presence of Indian community members and consulate officials.
The consul general read excerpts from Indian President Droupadi Murmu’s address to the nation. Later in the evening in further celebration of the occasion, a Qawwali Night was held at the International Indian School in Jeddah.
This year, India is commemorating the event through its “Azadi Ka Amrith Mahotsav” program of community and cultural events.
In Saudi Arabia, the embassy has hosted multiple events, including an international film festival, a golf tournament, a speaker series, and cultural exhibitions.
This commemoration coincides with the 75th anniversary of India and Saudi Arabia’s diplomatic relationship.
The G-20 partners have bilateral trade worth $43 billion, according to the Indian embassy.
