American commodity chemical company Dow Inc. is contemplating buying electricity from two small nuclear plants in the US in a bid to reach carbon neutrality by the year 2050.

“We need to double down on all forms of energy in this country. If you didn’t think we needed to do that before Russia-Ukraine, you really think we need to do it now,” said CEO of the firm Jim Fitterling, according to Bloomberg.

Nevertheless, the high costs and potential hazards associated with nuclear power is hindering the industry. This could be overcome if more firms support small plants linked to major industrial facilities, according to the chemical firm.

In addition to the power they produce, nuclear power plants also aid the chemical industry as they generate significant quantities of steam which can be used for manufacturing operations.

This balance between electricity and steam is highly beneficial especially in the chemical industry, Fitterling emphasized.
