ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan’s aide on political communication Shahbaz Gill has warned of “strict legal action” against anyone spreading what he described as “fake news” against Pakistan’s first lady Bushra Bibi.
Gill’s warning comes amid speculation last week that the first lady was living in Lahore, implying a rift between the couple.
“Strict legal action will be taken against those who are still spreading false news about First Lady,” Gill wrote on Twitter. “Both the First Lady and the Prime Minister are present in Islamabad.”
In a separate tweet Gill said the first lady had visited Lahore for the equivalent of one week in all of 2021, adding that she had not visited Lahore in the last few months and was presently living in Islamabad.
“If false news is given about family members who are not in politics, then they will be taken to court,” Gill warned.
Bibi’s marriage to Khan was announced in February 2018. She is his third wife after his first two marriages ended in divorce. Khan first tied the knot with Jemima Goldsmith, the daughter of a British billionaire, in 1995. The marriage ended in divorce in 2004. His second marriage with Reham Khan, then a TV anchor, lasted barely 10 months. Bibi is widely believed to be Khan’s “spiritual guide.”
