Alstom, the French rail maker, has been awarded a contract worth more than $1 billion to develop the transport sector in the Cairo, Egypt.
The company said the contract includes 55 trains with a capacity of nine locomotives per train, in addition to a maintenance contract for eight years.
Each train has a capacity of more than 2,500 passengers and includes a separate area for women.
The contracts, which are funded by the French government, were signed on the sidelines of the Smart Transport, Logistics & Traffic Fair and Forum (TransMEA 2021) which was held in Cairo.
The first line of the Cairo metro was inaugurated in 1987, and it is the oldest metro line in Egypt, transporting 2.5 million passengers daily between Al Marj and Helwan stations.
The development of the first line of the metro comes as part of the government's efforts to increase the capabilities of the public transport system in the capital, and improve the services provided to passengers.
