Pakistan, Uzbekistan to hold inaugural session of joint security commission this week

ISLAMABAD: Secretary of the Security Council of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Lt Gen Victor Makhmudov, arrived in Islamabad today, Monday, on a three-day visit on the invitation of the Pakistani National Security Adviser, Dr. Moeed Yusuf.
During the visit, the two sides will sign a protocol on forming a Joint Security Commission and hold the inaugural session of the body. Makhmudov will also call on the Pakistani prime minister and army chief.
“The Uzbek delegation will also visit Torkham border where they will be briefed by relevant authorities,” Yusuf’s office said in a statement. “Receiving cargo trucks from Uzbekistan through Afghanistan as part of the Pakistan-Uzbekistan connectivity initiative by the visiting delegation is also being envisaged during the visit.”
Prime Minister Imran Khan visited Uzbekistan in July to attend the Pakistan-Uzbekistan “Silk Route Reconnect” Business Forum and sign a significant transit agreement with Uzbekistan to allow Tashkent to utilize Pakistani seaports for much of its trade, bypassing Iran.
In May this year, the first TIR (Transports Internationaux Routiers/ International Road Transport) vehicle successfully crossed into Pakistan carrying goods from Uzbekistan via Afghanistan.
