Ahead of the 2021 Academy Awards – on April 26 – we look back at the six times Arab actors and filmmakers made a memorable mark on the Oscars red carpet.

  • Rami Malek

    At the 2019 Oscars ceremony, US-Egyptian actor Rami Malek became the first Arab actor to win the Best Actor trophy for his role as Freddie Mercury in the Queen biopic, “Bohemian Rhapsody.”

  • Sofia Boutella

    In 2017, the Algerian-French star arrived at the 89th Academy Awards wearing a sparkling silver, feather-trimmed Chanel Couture gown. Boutella featured in the Oscars-nominated “Star Trek: Beyond.”

  • Feras Fayyad

    The Syrian director received his first Oscar nomination in 2018 for his documentary “The Cave.”

  • Hala Kamil

    The subject of the Oscar-nominated short documentary “Watani: My Homeland,” the Syrian refugee stepped onto the 2017 Oscars red carpet in a custom velvet purple top and black skirt made by US label Brandon Maxwell.

    The Egyptian superstar made her Oscars debut in a custom dress that took 600 hours to craft from Lebanese designer Zuhair Murad’s Spring/Summer 2021 couture collection, inspired by Egypt.
