MADINAH: The municipality of Madinah launched an initiative to plant one million trees by the end of 2022 in Madinah and its provinces on Wednesday.

The plan is expected to cover the afforestation of all main roads and entrances, as well as the third ring road, in Madinah. The initiative also aims to protect the 3,628,538 trees previously planted in green spaces of 2,851,422 sq meters.

The municipality revealed that it will replace “harmful” trees with “environmentally friendly and human-friendly” trees and plants, taking urban development into consideration and rehabilitating roads and streets to improve the urban landscape, boost quality of life, reduce the effects of climate change, and reduce air pollution.

The initiative reflects the municipality’s desire to create a greener future for Saudi Arabia and the world, it announced, as well as improving and protecting the environment by increasing green spaces in the region.
