Who’s Who: Nasir Al-Naimi, senior vice president of upstream at Saudi Aramco

Nasir Al-Naimi was recently appointed senior vice president of upstream at Saudi Aramco. His responsibilities include exploration, petroleum engineering, drilling, oil and gas operations, unconventional resources, and upstream research and development.
Al-Naimi obtained a bachelor’s degree in petroleum engineering at the University of Southern California in 1985. He has also attended several leadership training programs, including the Asian Business and Culture Program in 2008, the London Business School Senior Executive Program in 2004 and the President’s Leadership Challenge in 1998.
He served the oil company as acting business line head of upstream from September 2020 until his new appointment.
Al-Naimi joined Saudi Aramco’s Petroleum Engineering Professional Development Program. During the course of the program, he assumed various supervisory roles in production engineering in major offshore oil fields such as Safaniya, Zuluf, and Marjan.
In 1994, he was appointed operations superintendent of the Zuluf facilities and then the Abu Ali facilities.
During his over two-decade association with Aramco, Al-Naimi has served in several leading roles in the company. He was appointed the vice chairman of the board of directors of Saudi Aramco Upstream Technology Co. in 2017.
In 2016, he was appointed vice president of petroleum engineering and development. Prior to that, he served as vice president of corporate planning.
He is also a board member of the Arabian Drilling Co., Saudi Aramco Energy Ventures, and Saudi Aramco Technology Co. He also served as a board member of Saudi Aramco Mobil Refinery Co. Ltd. between 2011 and 2014.

In 2012, Al-Naimi served as vice president of Northern Area Oil Operations, overseeing all oil and gas fields in the northern part of Saudi Arabia, in addition to the Shaybah field in the Rub’ Al-Khali desert.
