The shortlist for the Sheikh Zayed Book Award was revealed this week, with seven of the nine titles in the running written by women. Three works are competing in each of the award’s three categories. The works are from all corners of the MENA region, including from the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Tunisia, Palestine, Lebanon and Egypt. ‘To Love Life’ is the fourth novel from Lebanese author Alawiya Sobh.

‘An Artist’s Journey’
Published by Dar Al Mua’nasa in 2020, Tunisian writer Mizouni Bannani is competing in the ‘Children’s Literature’ category.

‘The Passengers’ Hall’
The novel was written by Egyptian novelist Ezzat El-Kamhawi, who was awarded the prestigious Naguib Mahfouz Medal for Literature for his previous novel “House of the Wolf.”

‘In the Footsteps of Enayat Al-Zayyat’
Published by Kotob Khan Books in late 2019, Egyptian writer Iman Mersal’s Arabic-language novel explores the story of a largely forgotten writer from the 1960s, Enayat Al-Zayyat.

‘The Beast and the Blackberry’
The children’s book by Emirati writer Naseeba Alozaibi is competing in the Children’s Literature Category.

Moroccan writer Raja Malah’s novel was selected from 13 entries on the ‘Children’s Literature’ longlist.
