CAIRO: The Egyptian Armed Forces killed 40 militants and arrested 12 others in operations between Nov. 1 and Dec. 8 as part of anti-terrorism efforts, a spokesman has said.
A statement by the military spokesman for the Egyptian Armed Forces said that the Egyptian Air Force destroyed storerooms of explosive materials in the northeastern part of the country used by terror groups as shelters to accumulate weapons and ammunition.
The statement said the operations resulted in the deaths of 25 “extremely dangerous individuals.”
Egypt’s air force also destroyed six booby-trapped vehicles used in terrorist operations, the statement added. A further 15 terrorists were killed in other operations.
Armed forces also arrested 12 terrorists in the northeast of Egypt, seizing automatic rifles, live ammunition, wireless communication devices and a number of passports, according to the statement.
In the same region, 150 explosive devices were discovered and destroyed on main roads and 32 motorcycles used by militants were destroyed.
The statement said that two officers, four non-commissioned officers and one soldier were killed in action.
It added that a joint operation between the air force and border guards directed a preemptive strike against terrorist elements by monitoring, targeting and destroying 21 four-wheel-drive vehicles loaded with weapons and ammunition attempting to cross Egypt’s western border.
The statement said that naval forces continued efforts to secure and protect Egypt’s coastal borders, as well as safeguard vital targets in Egyptian territorial waters in the Mediterranean and Red Sea.
