CAIRO: Egyptians have shared their outrage over the killing of a young woman who was dragged by a car as three men allegedly attempted to rob her.

Witnesses said the men aboard a white microbus, a common mode of transportation in Egypt, grabbed the woman’s backpack while she was walking in Cairo’s upscale Maadi district. One of the perpetrators reportedly clung to the bag while the vehicle was moving.

The woman, aged 24 and known as Maryam, suffered severe head injuries after smashing into a nearby car as a result.

As soon as reports dropped in Egyptian media, people have been expressing anger over the case.

The Egyptian prosecution on Thursday said in a report that it had arrested three suspects involved in the incident on suspicion of attempted robbery.

The report said the men had been allegedly attempting to steal the bag, contrary to initial reports which claimed the perpetrators’ motive was harassment.

The prosecution is also receiving testimonies from witnesses and will continue investigating the incident.
