The film focuses on Al-Khateab as she goes about her life in Aleppo from the start of the Syrian uprising through to the brutal siege of the city by regime forces and their allies.

In January, the film became the most nominated documentary in the history of the British Academy Film Awards.

“For Sama” has been nominated for outstanding British film; outstanding debut by a British writer, director or producer; best film not in the English language; and best documentary.

It was also shortlisted for the best documentary feature award at the Oscars in December 2019.
