Pakistan coronavirus recoveries jump to record 4,736 in 24 hours

• Pakistan has reported over 228,000 cases of the coronavirus so far and 4,712 deaths
• South Asian nation has continued to see around 4,000 new cases daily with falling testing numbers 

ISLAMABAD: Data on the Pakistan government’s coronavirus portal showed on Sunday that a record 4,736 people had recovered from the virus in the past 24 hours.
Pakistan has reported over 228,000 cases of the coronavirus so far and 4,712 deaths. The country has continued to see around 4,000 new cases on a daily basis, despite daily testing numbers falling.
The health ministry’s portal showed that the total number of people who had recovered from the coronavirus had risen to 129,830 and confirmed infections stood at 228,474 on Sunday.
Pakistan witnessed a sharp rise in COVID-19 cases in June, with over 3,191 new infections reported in the past 24 hours.
A number of high officials have tested positive for COVID-19 in Pakistan, including Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Minister for Railways Sheikh Rasheed, Leader of the Opposition Shehbaz Sharif and the speaker of the lower house of parliament, Asad Qaiser.
Last month, Pakistani authorities began to re-impose strict lockdowns in selected areas of several cities after the federal government said COVID-19 cases could multiply eightfold by the end of July and hit 1.2 million.
The South Asian country lifted its countrywide lockdown on May 9, citing economic stress, and has since seen infection rates rise from 1-in-10 tests to more than 1-in-5.
