DHAHRAN: A team of Saudi students from the College of Petroleum Engineering and Geosciences at King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM) won second place globally in the competition for the Imperial Barrel Award 2020 (AAPG-IBA) and clinched the top spot regionally.

Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Kaabi, dean of the college, said the competition, organized by the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) and held remotely, is about a project to evaluate an oil field, the possibility of its exploitation and identifying suitable drilling sites using the latest exploration and drilling methods to interpret the geological and geophysical information.
He said the Saudi team outperformed students from six prestigious American universities.
Furthermore, two students of KFUPM’s petroleum engineering department won the SPE Middle East and North Africa Student Paper contest, which was recently organized by the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE).
Ibrahim Goma won first place in the master’s division and Amjad Hassan won the 2nd place in the Ph.D. division.
