LONDON: US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo praised President Donald Trump on his decision to withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal last year, he tweeted on Saturday.

“Two years ago, DonaldTrump announced the bold decision to protect the world from Iran’s violence and nuclear threats by withdrawing from the Iran Deal. Today, Americans are safer and the Middle East is more peaceful than if we had remained in the JCPOA,” the tweet read.

Trump withdrew from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action in May 2018, and reimposed sanctions on Iran. In response, Iran began enriching uranium in breach of the agreement, in an attempt to put pressure on European states to save the deal.
