ISLAMABAD: Senator Shibli Faraz took the oath of office on Tuesday, a day after he was appointed Pakistan’s new information minister.

President Arif Alvi received the oath during a ceremony at the Presidential Palace in Islamabad.

The role assumed by Faraz was vacant since April 2019, when Science and Technology Minister Fawad Chaudhry, who earlier held the information portfolio, took his current office.

Senator Faraz is one of the central leaders of the ruling party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and the son of prominent Urdu poet Ahmad Faraz.

On Monday, Prime Minister Imran Khan also appointed Lt Gen (retd) Asim Saleem Bajwa as his special assistant for information, replacing Firdous Ashiq Awan.

Bajwa is a former director-general of the Pakistani military’s media wing, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR). Prior to his current role, he was serving as chairman of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor Authority (CPECA).

The prime minister has changed his media team for a third time since coming to power in August 2018.
