NOUAKCHOTT: A volunteer surgical team from Saudi Arabia has completed a life-saving medical mission to Mauritania.
The King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSRelief) campaign in the northwest African country saw the team carry out 27 open-heart operations and 39 catheterizations on children, all of which were successful.
The project was run in partnership with the Muslim World League’s International Organization for Relief, Welfare and Development (IORWD).
During their time in Mauritania, members of the team reviewed the cases of 210 children from low-income families and provided CT scans for some of them. The medical mission also provided training for 35 local health practitioners from different specialties.
Last September, KSRelief signed three agreements with the IORWD to implement volunteer medical campaigns to treat heart conditions and thyroid tumors in Mauritania, Niger and Morocco, with the aim of providing low-income patients with advanced medical care which might otherwise not have been available to them.
