RIYADH: In a recent visit to the Netherlands, a delegation from the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture explored investment opportunities in the fisheries sector.
The visit included a stop at one of the most prestigious Dutch universities specializing in studies and research related to the agricultural sector.
The delegation viewed specialized studies in aquaponics and inspected the university’s aquatic facilities with the aim of using Dutch experience to develop Saudi industry and promote sustainable development.
Aquaponics refers to any system that combines conventional aquaculture (raising aquatic animals in tanks) with hydroponics (cultivating plants in water) in a symbiotic environment.
The delegation also visited several leading companies in the acquaculture (fish farming) industry to learn important techniques and practices, and to apply this knowledge in the development of this promising industry.
The ministry plans to improve food security and increase production to 600,000 tons to achieve the goals set out by the Kingdom’s Vision 2030.
Dr. Ali Al-Shaikhi, general director of the General Directorate of Fisheries and CEO of the National Fisheries Development Program, said the aim of the visit is to make use of successful Dutch experiences in various sectors related to aquaculture, smart technologies and sustainable development, and to provide an opportunity for young businessmen and entrepreneurs to participate in a series of field visits and workshops.
