RIYADH: A prominent Iraqi activist has been assassinated in Karbala province amid increasing violence against anti-government protesters, Al Arabiya reported.

A gang attacked civilian activist Fahem Abu Ali Al-Tae’ie using guns with silencers fitted, the report said.

Three shots were reportedly fired at the activist outside the Ansar Hotel in the Al-Baroudi district.

Sources quoted by the channel said security forces have cordoned off the site.Al-Tae’ie is said to be a member of the Sadrist movement led by cleric Moqtada Al-Sadr. 

He accused religious parties before his assassination of being involved in killing Iraqi activists.
