What We Are Reading Today: Tough Love by Susan A. Rice

Recalling pivotal moments from her dynamic career on the front lines of American diplomacy and foreign policy, Susan E. Rice delivers an inspiring account of a life in service to family and country.

Rice’s new memoir, Tough Love: My Story of the Things Worth Fighting For, spans not only many of the complex issues she faced in the administrations of former US Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, but also the complexity of being an African American woman in government.

She served throughout the Clinton administration, becoming one of the nation’s youngest assistant secretaries of state and, later, one of Obama’s most trusted advisers.

Rice deserves credit for unsparingly owning up to her reputation as a difficult boss, said Abby D. Phillip in a review for The New York Times.

“Rice leaves the question of her future largely unanswered, but it seems clear that she is not ready to leave the arena. She closes the book with several prescriptions for the excessive divisions and partisanship she believes ail America,” said Phillip.
