14 killed as heavy rains wreak havoc in major parts of Karachi
  • Majority of the deaths caused by electrocution and drowning
  • All educational institutions ordered to remain shut for two days

KARACHI: At least 14 people were killed and several others injured due to heavy rains that paralyzed human life in Karachi and other parts of Sindh, officials told Arab News on Tuesday.
“The rain started on Monday and will continue until Wednesday,” Sardar Sarfaraz, a MET office official told Arab News, adding “up to 165-millimeter rainfall has been recorded in Karachi.”

Earlier, officials had warned that the incessant rains could lead to flooding in Karachi, Thatta and Hyderabad divisions on Monday and Tuesday.Dr. Seemi Jamali, a spokesperson at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center JPMC said that six people had been brought to the hospital’s emergency department on Monday and Tuesday, with most deaths caused by electrocution.
Meanwhile, Dr. Birbal Genani, a spokesperson of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation’s hospitals told Arab News that a child was among those killed by electrocution.

“Over 50 injured were also brought to the hospital,” he said. Dr. Khadim Hussain, a medical superintendent at Karachi’s Civil Hospital said five other people, had also died of a similar cause. Separately, officials from the Chhipa rescue service said that three children had drowned in a riven in the Teen Hatti neighborhood of the city, while one had been rescued.
Meanwhile, with the Thado Dam in the Gadap outskirts of the city reaching its limit, floodwater entered homes in the Saadi Town and Usmanabad neighborhoods on Tuesday evening. It also flowed into the M-9 highway, which connects Karachi to Hyderabad and the rest of Pakistan, resulting in the closure of one part of the highway.
Taking stock of the situation, Sindh’s education department on Monday ordered for all schools, colleges, and universities to declare a holiday in Karachi on Tuesday.
