ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan will lead a delegation from Pakistan for the 14th edition of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation’s (OIC) summit in Makkah, Saudi Arabia on May 31, the Foreign Office said in a statement released on Wednesday.
Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz has invited 57 members of the OIC to attend the summit which seeks to provide a valuable platform to exchange views and deliberate on a range of key issues, it added.
Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi, who reached Jeddah on Tuesday, will be participating in the OIC’s Council of Foreign Ministers meeting on Wednesday to finalize the agenda ahead of the leaders’ session in Makkah.
FM Qureshi will also participate in the meeting of the OIC’s Contact Group on Jammu and Kashmir where he will be interacting with his counterparts from other member states.
The OIC has been a vocal supporter of Pakistan in the Jammu and Kashmir dispute by way of its resolutions, communiqués and declarations – something which Islamabad recognizes.
“The prime minister will, among other things, focus on the imperatives of solidarity and unity of the Ummah, support for Muslim causes including Jammu and Kashmir, countering growing Islamophobia, and ensuring educational and scientific excellence,” excerpts from the statement read.
The year marks the 50th anniversary of the OIC’s establishment.
According to details shared by the Foreign Office, the OIC is the second largest multilateral organization after the United Nations, encompassing a quarter of the humanity and a cumulative GDP of $19.4 trillion.
“As one of its founding members, Pakistan has played a key role in advancing a range of Muslim causes, in efforts to revitalize the organization,” the statement added.
