ISLAMABAD: A Pakistani TV anchor facing embezzlement charges was Saturday taken into custody for following a court order.
Dr. Shahid Masood is being probed over his time as chairman of the state-owned Pakistan Television network in 2008.
Masood is accused of deliberately signing an agreement with a fake company to obtain media rights for the Pakistan Cricket Board, but PTV failed to acquire the rights.
He denies the allegations.
The Federal Investigation Agency requested the remand order from a judge in Islamabad and detained Masood from the Islamabad High Court premises on Friday as his pre-arrest bail was dismissed.
In June a lower court in Islamabad had issued non-bailable arrest warrants for Masood in the alleged embezzlement of PKR30 million.
He was also banned by Pakistan’s chief justice from appearing on TV for three months after his false claims regarding the presence of an international pornographic ring in Pakistan.
His claim was deemed baseless by an investigation.
