5 things Pakistan, India do trade with each other
  • The current $2 billion Pakistan-India trade volume has the potential to reach $37 billion, says World Bank report
  • Despite border tensions, the two countries remained engaged in trade — mostly commodities

Put India and Pakistan in a sentence and the usual phrases come to mind: nuclear armed neighbors, arch rivals, cricket clashes, Hindi/Urdu movies, etc. Trading partners is not usually one of them.
A recent World Bank study pointed out that the bilateral trade potential between Pakistan and India is $37 billion without barriers, and political tensions. Currently it stands at about $2 billion.
While it is significantly below the potential, what do we know about the $2 billion that is traded between the countries. Here we look at the five things that are traded between the two countries.

1. Nuts and fruits
Among Pakistan’s major exports to India are fruit and nuts. But not just the plump edible kind … You know all those kinnows and oranges you gobble up every winter? Guess where their peels end up … India!
2. Cotton
Cotton and cotton products are by far the largest export from India to Pakistan. Last year Pakistan imported more than half a billion dollars’ worth of cotton from its eastern neighbor.
3. Salt and minerals
You know that spectacular Ambani mansion in Mumbai? We cannot say for sure, but it might be "Made in Pakistan." Or at least partially. Actually, we have no idea… But plastering materials, lime and cement, mineral fuels, and mineral oils are all among the major exports from Pakistan to India.
4. Chemicals and machinery
As Indian manufacturing rises in the world, it seems to be helping its western neighbor along as well. India sells a ton of organic chemicals, plastics and articles thereof, machinery, and mechanical appliances to Pakistan.
5. Leather
Finally, how can we forget the product Pakistan exports to almost every trading partner? Rawhides and leather are among the top things Pakistan ships to India. No wonder all the South Asians who go abroad for the first time always have the same leather jackets from DDLJ!
So while both the countries have long negative lists, and tremendous trade barriers for each other, there seems to be a glimmer of hope that they could become economically dependent on each other, aka friends.
